NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA - JANUARY 01: A sign for the Allstate Sugar Bowl between Georgia and Notre Dame is seen outside the Louisiana Superdome after at least ten people were killed on Bourbon Street when a person allegedly drove into a crowd in the early morning hours of New Year's Day on January 1, 2025 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dozens more were injured after a suspect in a rented pickup truck allegedly drove around barricades and through a crowd of New Year's revelers on Bourbon Street. The suspect then got out of the car, opened fire on police officers, and was subsequently killed by law enforcement. (Photo by Chris Graythen/Getty Images)

New Orleans- During a New Year’s Eve celebration on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Louisiana, a driver took his pickup truck into the crowd, taking the lives of at least 15 people and injuring at least 25. The FBI is currently investigating the incident as an act of terrorism.

The tragedy occurred early on the morning that the Georgia Bulldogs and Notre Dame Fighting Irish were to match up in the Allstate Sugar Bowl for the right to move on to the College Football Playoff Semi-Finals. The incident, which occurred on Bourbon Street, happened just blocks from where the two teams are staying.

The Sugar Bowl released a statement on Wednesday saying, “We are in ongoing discussions with authorities on the local, state, and federal levels and will communicate further details as they become available.”

Following further developments in the investigation, the decision was made to postpone the playing of the Sugar Bowl for 24 hours, meaning it will now take place on Thursday, January 2. The news was initially broken by WDSU News in Atlanta and later confirmed by Allstate Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley.

The Sugar Bowl team will now have to quickly arrange the logistics of the new scheduling, saying in a newly released statement, “We will communicate further details as they become available.”

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey also released a statement, confirming the details of the reasoning for the postponement, stating, “The decision to postpone tonight’s Sugar Bowl was made in the best interest of public safety.”

The postponement of the Allstate Sugar Bowl may have further effects on the College Football Playoff schedule with semi-final matchups currently scheduled for next Thursday, January 9, and Friday, January 10.
