BYU Signee Abdullah Ahmed Will Play In 2025-26 Season

PROVO, Utah – Former G-League center Abdullah Ahmed, who signed with BYU basketball in November, is going to play in the 2025-26 season.
Ahmed told Joe Tipton of On3 that he will make his BYU debut in Monday’s game against Eastern Washington.

In addition to preparing for his debut this Monday, Tipton reports that Ahmed will have three years of eligibility in his collegiate career. Ahmed has spent the past two years with the Westchester Knicks of the G-League.
A BYU Basketball spokesperson confirmed that Ahmed will be a sophomore on the 2025-26 roster and is available to play on Monday night.
When Ahmed signed with BYU in November, the expectation was that he would join the team in December. The question was whether he would play this season.
Ahmed has been in attendance in the stands for BYU’s last three home games at the Marriott Center, including last night’s win over Abilene Christian.
With Brigham Young University’s fall semester now over, Ahmed can join midyear and enroll in the winter semester.
Ahmed’s addition could add versatility to BYU’s frontcourt.
Potential impact Ahmed could have on BYU’s rotation
Ahmed could emerge as the top backup behind starter Keba Keita, allowing for Khadim Mboup, who earned his first career start in Friday’s win over Abilene Christian in relief of an ill Keita, to have the chance to get more minutes at the four.
The four is a position that Mboup acknowledged last week after the win over UC Riverside, is a spot he’s played his “whole life.”
During his two seasons with the G-League’s Westchester Knicks, Ahmed started six games and posted averages of 3.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks.
“He’s an elite rim protector and rebounder with great size, length, and skilll,” BYU basketball head coach Kevin Young said of Ahmed when he signed in November. “We love his defensive mindset, his ability to run the floor and the energy he plays with around the basket. He’s going to help anchor our defense, finish plays at the rim and give us a real presence in the paint, along with skill that fits in great with our style of play.“
BYU basketball takes on Eastern Washington at 7 p.m. on Monday, December 22, on ESPN+ and KSL NewsRadio (102.7 FM, 1160 AM).
