It’s the first time in the Big 12 era that BYU will wear the alternate black uniform at the Marriott Center.
The last time that BYU donned black threads at home was in the final home game of the WCC era for BYU against San Francisco on February 25, 2023.
BYU is 5-0 at home wearing black uniforms.
The first time that BYU wore black uniforms at the Marriott Center was during the COVID season in 2020-21 against Utah Valley.
BYU’s history with alternate black uniforms dates back to the 1997-98 season under Steve Cleveland. They rolled out a black jersey with royal-blue script that read “COUGS.”
While wearing those jerseys, BYU knocked off a nationally ranked New Mexico team in The Pit, ending the Lobos’ 41-game home winning streak.
Black uniforms were gone until the 2016-17 season, the same one worn against UVU in 2020. During that 2016-17 season, BYU wore black uniforms against USC and Illinois.
Then, during the 2022-23 season, BYU unveiled an alternate black uniform that remains an alternate today.
Since Kevin Young became BYU’s head coach, the Cougars have picked up big wins in black uniforms. Last year, BYU knocked off top-10 Iowa State in Ames in double overtime.
Then, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, BYU defeated Wisconsin in black uniforms to advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 14 years.
