Nov 1, 2026, 5:22 PM
SALT LAKE CITY — BYU basketball tips off the 2026-27 season in one of the best matchups on the opening night schedule in college hoops.
The Cougars will face the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Both teams were single-digit seeds last year in the NCAA Tournament, but suffered Round of 64 exits.
As is the case with any college basketball team, there’s a lot of new faces on both of these teams. Still, there are some key returners for both as well, headlined by preseason All-American candidate Rob Wright III for BYU and Ohio State preseason All-Big Ten guard John Mobley Jr.
Some standout new faces include a pair of star freshmen: BYU’s Bruce Branch III and Ohio State’s Anthony Thompson.
Branch, who turned 18 years old last week, was the fifth overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite rankings for the class of 2026, while Thompson was ranked as the ninth prospect in the cycle.
BYU basketball head coach Kevin Young tips off his third season leading the Cougars. After an eventful offseason with many twists and turns, it’s time to play some games that count in the record books.
