PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball was able to retain point guard Rob Wright III.
The five-star talent left the transfer portal, spurning the Kentucky Wildcats, to re-up with BYU.
In an Instagram post, Wright, who is a man of few words, simply said, “I’m back.”
It’s a building-block piece for BYU’s roster construction for the 2026-27 season. Wright finished last year at BYU with averages of 18.1 points, 4.6 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game. He was a player BYU leaned on as part of its “Big 3,” which included AJ Dybantsa and Richie Saunders.
High expectations for Rob Wright III from BYU coach Kevin Young
The Wilmington, Delaware, native could have a bigger role next season. His head coach, third-year headman Kevin Young, is bullish on the star guard.
“Rob is the best point guard in college basketball,” Young said in a written statement after Wright announced his return. “He is poised to lead our team as the floor general and help be an extension of our staff. I’m looking forward to continuing to coach Rob and help him develop his game.”
Wright earned Third Team All-Big 12 honors last season for a BYU squad that reached the NCAA Tournament as a 6-seed, before falling in the first round to the Texas Longhorns.
In Wright’s first two seasons of college basketball with Baylor and BYU, both of the teams he’s been part of have reached the NCAA Tournament.
