PROVO, Utah – Former BYU basketball center Xavion Staton has a new landing spot out of the NCAA transfer portal.

The 6-foot-11 Staton has committed to play for Oregon State.

After spending two years in the West Coast Conference, Oregon State is returning to the new Pac-12 Conference beginning next season. Staton will be part of the frontcourt for the Beavers.

Oregon State hired Justin Joyner to be the Beavers’ next head coach. Joyner was most recently an assistant coach with the National Champion Michigan Wolverines.

When Staton was coming out of Sierra Vista High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Michigan Wolverines were among the programs pursuing him before he committed to and signed with BYU.

Staton was part of the BYU basketball program for one year

Staton was part of the BYU program for one season. He’s a former four-star recruit who was No. 36 overall in the class of 2025 out of Las Vegas, then later Utah Prep, where he was a high school teammate with AJ Dybantsa.

Staton appeared in only nine games during his freshman season with the BYU basketball program. He was sidelined for all of Big 12 play due to knee rehab. Staton noted last month that he was addressing an injury dating back to his high school career.

The 6-foot-11 center was one of the top shot blockers in the class of 2025.

Xavion Staton picked BYU over Michigan, Stanford, and UNLV, coming out of Sierra Vista High School in Las Vegas.

One of Staton’s most productive games during his freshman season was against the national runner-up UConn Huskies, where he scored three points in eight minutes of action off the bench.

“I’m incredibly grateful for my time at this University and for everything it has poured into me, on and off the court. This past season has been a year of growth, discipline, and development beyond just basketball. I believe everything happens for a reason, and every step is part of the path I’m meant to walk,” Staton wrote on his social media post.

Staton continued, “I want to sincerely thank my coaches, teammates, and the entire program for pushing me, believing in me, and helping me grow every day. I’m also extremely grateful for my family and their constant love and support.

“To Cougar Nation—thank you for embracing me, supporting me, and showing love throughout this journey. It never went unnoticed. I will always have love for you all.

“With that being said, I will be entering the transfer portal as I take the next step in my career. I’m excited for what’s ahead and fully trusting God in this next chapter.”

There are six players from BYU’s 2025-26 roster who have entered the NCAA transfer portal. Staton is the first to commit to a new school.
