No. 2 BYU vs. UCF: Game day preview plus score prediction

ORLANDO, Fla. — A month ago, BYU vs UCF probably wouldn’t have been a game with much of a focus in the national college football discourse. However, after BYU’s upset win over Notre Dame and rise to No. 2 in the AP Top 25 poll, many are wondering what BYU’s follow-up act will be after a memorable win over the Irish.
BYU enters the game with a 6-0 record and a 3-0 mark in Big 12 play.

UCF is 3-3 overall and 1-2 in Big 12 action.
Last year, BYU defeated UCF 41-21 in the regular-season finale amid Kalani Sitake’s coaching carousel talks with Penn State. The Knights had an early 14-0 lead in that game.
Could BYU be on upset watch in this game?
Let’s dive into the matchup as BYU prepares for its first-ever game as a No. 2-ranked team. It’s the highest ranking for the Cougars since their 1984 National Championship season.

Three game day thoughts
1. BYU is mature enough to avoid the cliché “letdown” after a big win
Throughout the week, the storyline around BYU football’s matchup against UCF has been the word “letdown.”
When you look at the spot, there’s a lot of travel, a team coming off a bye week, and the pressure to move on from a memorable win that will be remembered for decades. On the surface, that could be the recipe for a potential upset. Especially with how often we’re seeing upsets in college football this season.
However, this BYU team will be mature enough to move forward and turn the page.
Players mentioned this week after practice how disappointing it was to lose to Kansas two years ago after a big win over rival Utah. The theme of this year’s team was “run it back,” not to take down Notre Dame, but to win the Big 12 and reach the College Football Playoff.
BYU’s locker room has many mature players who have logged plenty of snaps in college football. They know the job isn’t finished.
Look for BYU to jump out to a quick start to silence the “letdown” talk.
A quick start will be important here. The Knights have scored on their first possession in four consecutive games.
2. Both of these teams are at the bottom of the Big 12 in average plays per game
BYU averages 59.3 offensive plays per game this season. That’s the fewest plays per game for a Big 12 team. Right next to BYU is UCF at 60.5 plays per game.
That suggests this could be a game with 8-10 possessions for each team. Taking advantage of scoring opportunities will be important.
Both teams are the top two in the Big 12 in “Points Per Opportunity” when getting the ball to the opponent’s 40-yard line or closer.
3. Avoid the mistakes on special teams
In the last two games, BYU’s special teams have muffed punts. One was from Tiger Bachmeier against Iowa State, then Cannon DeVries muffed one against Notre Dame.
DeVries responded with a key punt return to the BYU 45-yard line to set up the final scoring drive of the game for the Cougars. However, the muffed punt opened the door for Notre Dame to get back into the game when they were trailing 21-10.
When you’re on the road, miscues in the third phase of the game could be disastrous. Avoid those at all costs.
Two BYU vs UCF questions
1. How does Bear Bachmeier move forward after a win that was emotional and personal to him?
Last week’s win over Notre Dame was a big moment for the entire BYU football program. But the win meant even more for star quarterback Bear Bachmeier.
Bear said Notre Dame’s program under Marcus Freeman “disrespected” him and his family, and that the game meant a lot to him.
The sophomore signal-caller was emotional after the win.
Bear put in an impressive performance, showing the nation he’s more than a runner; he can be an accurate passer, too.
This is Bear’s first road game since the TCU game, when he passed for only 62 yards. Rain is possible in the second half today, but it’s not expected to be as heavy as the humid mist that poured down in Fort Worth.
Bachmeier has done enough to be one of the top Heisman Trophy candidates to this point in the season. A strong follow-up after last week’s Heisman moment will only build that momentum for Bear.

2. Will BYU’s defense record an interception against UCF?
It’s strange to think, but BYU hasn’t logged an interception in the past two games. In fact, BYU has lost the turnover battle in back-to-back weeks, yet has still come out on top with wins.
BYU’s defense has generated HAVOC elsewhere, but an interception could deflate UCF. The Knights aren’t explosive through the air, and most of their work is near the line of scrimmage. But if they do take shots down the field, can BYU’s secondary, which enters this matchup with a lot of confidence, come up with some picks?
BYU has three interceptions through the first half of the season. The last interception was against TCU, when Faletau Satuala picked off Jaden Craig.
One score prediction for BYU vs UCF
UCF doesn’t have enough offensive firepower to deliver an upset over BYU. It’s been more than a year since the Knights reached the 30-point mark against a Power Four opponent.
Look for BYU to be efficient on offense with some methodical, time-consuming touchdown drives and no giveaways to the Knights. That should get BYU out of the Bounce House with a double-digit win.
Score prediction: BYU 28, UCF 17
