Outlook For BYU WR Chase Roberts During Spring Practice

Feb 27, 2025, 11:43 AM

PROVO, Utah – BYU senior wide receiver Chase Roberts is recovering from an injury he suffered in the Alamo Bowl win over Colorado.

Days after publicly announcing he would return for the 2025 season, Roberts suffered the injury against the Buffs. The senior pass catcher noted on the “Inside The Y” podcast that his injury was a torn labrum.

He left the Alamodome that night in December in a sling.

Less than two months after that dominant bowl victory, BYU football is set to kick off spring practices for the 2025 season.

BYU’s 15 practices will take place from February 27 until March 29.

Top priority for BYU football with Chase Roberts: Get him healthy

The top priority for the veteran Roberts, who has totaled 1,784 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns over the last three seasons at BYU, is to be ready for the fall.

“…I know what Chase can do. The biggest thing for him is to get healthy,” said BYU Passing Game Coordinator/WR coach Fesi Sitake to KSL Sports.

Sitake continued, “This is a great opportunity for him to continue what he’s always done, which is to look outwardly. To train these young guys to be super polished, look at all of the nuances of this playbook. Help bring some of these guys who are struggling and maybe have high expectations for themselves. So, I’m super excited for him to take on that role. He’s always done it, but you can’t do it at the level he’s about to do it now unless you can’t practice. We’ve kind of had to frame it that way. He gets it.”

Chase Roberts: Ultimate Professional

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Roberts has led BYU in receiving yards the past two seasons.

Roberts is 583 yards away from cracking into the Top 10 all-time career receiving yards in BYU history. He’s 1,057 yards away from entering the Top 5.

“Then in the season … I have the highest of expectations for him,” Fesi Sitake said. “That’s not in a way to put pressure on him. He knows it. That kid’s special. He’ll go down, for sure, as one of those receivers in BYU history. He deserves it. I’ll take a million Chase Roberts and just how he carries himself every single day, how he operates. He’s the ultimate professional.”

Wide receivers to watch during spring practice

Along with Roberts, BYU’s wide receiver unit in 2025 includes Parker Kingston and Jojo Phillips. Both players could be due for potential breakout seasons this year. Sitake noted that both players are “ready and primed for it” with their progress during their BYU careers.

BYU also brings back Keelan Marion, who saw his touches increase as the season progressed last year.

Then, they have young players such as Cody Hagen, Tei Nacua, and Dominique McKenzie. Hagen is currently dealing with an undisclosed injury that could limit some of his availability during spring practices.

But the star of the group in 2025 is Roberts.

“I’m excited to watch him [this season],” Sitake said on Roberts. “We’re gonna use him in a lot of different ways. I think the targets will increase with him for various reasons. But yeah, I can’t wait to watch his production.”
