BYU Men Take Eighth Place At NCAA Track Finals

AUSTIN, Texas – The BYU men’s track and field squad finished in eight place at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships on Friday night.
With a final score of 27 points, the Cougars finished seven spots behind Texas Tech, which ran away with the title with a score of 60. The Cougars’ eighth place finish was their best since 2011.
“It was an evening of ups and downs,” BYU head coach Ed Eyestone said. ” This was a great end to an amazing season for our men’s team to finish eighth in the nation. Now we look to continue the trend in the future.”

Clayton Young had the best day of all of BYU’s qualified athletes as he took home the national championship in the 10,000-meter event. He also finished sixth in the 5,000-meter to compliment a strong outing by Conner Mantz, who had finished seventh in the 5,000-meter and fourth in the 10,000-meter.
The Cougars also performed well in the steeplechase, sending an NCAA-record four runners to the finals. Matt Owens led the way for BYU in the event with an eight place finish.

The women’s team will wrap up their events in the finals on Saturday. The Cougars have five female athletes competing on the final day of the Championships.
