Fans Attending BYU-SDSU Can Donate To Gideon George Shoe Drive

PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball starting forward Gideon George has always been a man of service. A native of Nigeria, George has utilized his basketball platform to provide service for his home country in Africa.

George asks all of the fans attending tonight’s game against San Diego State to help with his charitable cause. If you’re attending the BYU/SDSU game at the Marriott Center, there will be a 20-foot bin to drop off pairs of new or lightly used shoes or backpacks.
This is part of George’s Sneakers For Africa campaign in conjunction with Timeout For Africa and BYU Global Supply Chain Management.

“It’s really different from the setting out here [in Provo],” George said on growing up in Nigeria during the weekly Mark Pope Coaches Show (Tuesday, 9 p.m., KSL NewsRadio). “It’s a little town. Not very much out there; it’s not like America. You guys are blessed out here, for sure. Having constant lights of 24 hours of electricity out here, running water. I don’t get running water at home, only in the shower. So I don’t take that for granted out here.”
George asked fans not just to bring basketball shoes, but church shoes and shoes kids can wear to school.
“I’m encouraging you all to bring shoes, fairly used shoes and new shoes for kids back home in Mina, Nigeria,” said George. “Not only just for basketball, for them to get like good shoes to go to church and to go to school back home in Nigeria. And like, keep them away from diseases. So I’m encouraging you to donate shoes for kids in Nigeria because you are changing lives in Nigeria for sure.”
