Utah State searches for answers after season-opening loss to Idaho State

The Aggies’ head coach used his postgame press conference after Utah State’s loss to Idaho State to give a blunt assessment of where his team stands after Week 1: the team wasn’t prepared to win.

Mendenhall pointed to the front, the quarterback, and the unit’s overall precision as areas that need immediate improvement.

“Offensive football certainly starts with the front; the quarterback directs the whole thing, and then just precision and execution,” Mendenhall said. “There were glimpses here and there, but nothing consistent to where it looked like, ‘Oh man, that’s going to be what this offense looks like.’ So we have quite a ways to go.”

The penalties were especially frustrating as the Aggies were flagged 11 times for 83 yards.

Utah State worked crowd noise and late-game situations throughout camp, Mendenhall said, but the preparation didn’t carry over the way it needed to.

“Clearly, the depth that the training went to stopped short of the threshold needed for the penalties not to happen,” Mendenhall said. “So, yeah, double down and continue to work on it.”

Defense forced into tough spots, but Harrison Taggart wants more takeaways

Linebacker Harrison Taggart said the defense has to do more to change games.

Taggart wasn’t satisfied with the way Utah State started defensively, even if the group settled in later.

“I didn’t like how we came out,” Taggart said. “I liked how we finished. But I felt like we got in a little bit of a rhythm, but I didn’t like it.”

The next step, he said, is more about the team’s response than the result itself.

With Washington and Utah coming next on the schedule, Utah State doesn’t have much time to sit with the loss. Taggart said the Aggies have to decide quickly how connected they want to be.

“Playing, I’ve noticed that the most connected teams are the best teams,” Taggart said. “Just staying together, bringing everybody together — obviously not the outcome that we wanted, but coming together as one and going from there.”

Then he put it more simply.

“You’re either in, or you’re out,” Taggart said. “Being one heartbeat, being one team, that’ll be super important.”

Eli Wood says Aggies can’t let one game define them

Wide receiver Eli Wood had one of the strongest individual performances of his career, but his career-high six catches for 90 yards and a touchdown didn’t mean much after the loss.

“We lost. That’s really the only thing that matters,” Wood said. “But we can’t let one game define us. We’ve got to come back on Monday ready to work.”

Wood said Idaho State deserves credit for the way it adjusted defensively after Utah State had early success. But, like Mendenhall, he brought the offensive struggles back to execution.

“We just got to be better adjusting,” Wood said. “We just got to execute better because it’s really about us. And when we weren’t moving the ball, it was about us. Credit to them, they played a great game. But we just got to execute better.”

The locker room, Wood said, still believes in both quarterbacks and still believes in what the season can become.

“This team believes in both those guys,” Wood said. “Whichever one is in there is one we can win a game with. The whole team is rallying behind both of those guys. There’s been zero confidence lost in any of them.”

That belief will be tested immediately.

Utah State has 11 regular-season games remaining, and the road ahead gets difficult quickly with road tilts against the Washington Huskies and Utah Utes. But Wood said the goals the Aggies set before the season are still in front of them.

“Every goal that we set out for us is still attainable,” Wood said. “This team is really close. We’re not going to let this break us up.”

Mendenhall’s message was similar. The Aggies have to review the loss honestly, address what failed and move on.

“Part of life is, man, you learn, you apply, and then you go,” Mendenhall said. “The team, they get tonight and tomorrow and Monday morning’s team meeting, and then we’re on to the next one.”

Wood said the team’s response has to begin with staying together.

“The locker room is hurting right now, but we’ve just got to stay together,” Wood said. “That’s really the main thing. It’s the first game of the season. We’ve got a lot to work on, and we’ve got 11 more.”
