Utah State is finding its identity. Can the Aggies take it on the road?

LOGAN – Bronco Mendenhall isn’t measuring Utah State’s progress only by what shows up on the scoreboard.
He sees it in the way players respond to adversity, prepare for another week, and celebrate each other’s success. The wins are beginning to follow.
Saturday’s 17-10 victory over Fresno State gave the Aggies their third Pac-12 win and another example of the identity Mendenhall has been working to establish: tough, connected and willing to win ugly.
“Our kids are tough, and they’re resilient, and they just keep showing up,” Mendenhall said. “They kind of keep showing up for whatever situation it is.”

Utah State improved to 4-5 with its second consecutive victory, keeping its bowl hopes alive after an uneven start to the season. Next is a road game at San Diego State on Saturday, Nov. 14, and a chance to show that its recent progress can travel.
For Mendenhall, the improvement hasn’t required a dramatic change in message. It has required sticking with one.
Earlier challenges provided lessons. The work continued regardless of the results or the outside reaction.
“We learned, we grew. And, yeah, we’re seeing some of the results now,” Mendenhall said. “Just show up in this room for the next day of work, hearing what we’re doing well, what we can improve on. Commit to each other to do it again regardless of whatever else is being said or thought.”
Defense gives Utah State a foundation to build on
Against Fresno State, that persistence showed up most clearly on defense.
The Aggies held the Bulldogs to 16 rushing yards and kept them out of the end zone until the final minutes. It marked the third straight game in which USU held an opponent to under 100 rushing yards.
Defensive tackle Tyree Morris described a group taking ownership of its expectations.
“We’ve been setting goals, and I feel like we’ve been meeting them,” Morris said. “We take pride in those goals, and we take that to heart.”
“We’re realizing what it takes to win. I feel like we have so much more to play for for the rest of this year.”

That pride has given the Aggies something dependable while the offense works to find its footing.
“We take pride in our defense,” Morris said. “And that’s something we do take pride in, stopping the run. We’ve been harping on that a lot.”
Mendenhall sees the two sides increasingly working together rather than chasing separate measures of success.
“The defense certainly, man, is playing phenomenally well, and the offense is capitalizing,” he said.
That approach will remain important at SDSU. Utah State doesn’t need every possession to produce a highlight. It needs to make the opportunities its defense creates count.
The offense is finding its cohesion
The rushing attack has become part of that formula.
Mendenhall praised the physicality of multiple backs and improved blocking against Fresno State. But he pushed back on the idea that the improvement was simply a product of the past two weeks.
“Sometimes there’s just a compounding effect,” he said. “And then there’s a point where traction occurs.”

Running back Sesi Vailahi said the early struggles forced the offense to examine what needed to change.
“The first couple of games, we were struggling in the run game,” Vailahi said. “So I think we really took the time to really dial in what we had to do in the run game. Coming into this game, we knew it was going to be a physical game.”
The preparation has extended beyond the practice field.
Vailahi credited quarterback McCae Hillstead with organizing additional offensive meetings, giving players more time to work through their responsibilities together.
“Right after practice, he gathers us, just the offense, to have a little quick 30-minute meeting,” Vailahi said. “I think the stuff he does off the field is what helps us execute on the field.”

That investment is helping turn individual effort into a more connected offense.
“We were struggling early in the season, but I feel like we’re finally coming in as one towards the end of the season,” Vailahi said.
Taking the next step on the road
The trip to San Diego State offers another test of that growth.
Mendenhall pointed to maturity, experience and poise as reasons the Aggies are handling tight situations better. With three games remaining, he emphasized the importance of concentration and precise execution.
The challenge now is to maintain those habits rather than treat consecutive wins as proof the work is finished.
Utah State’s resilience has kept the season moving forward. Its recent execution has paid off that persistence.
“It’s not perfect, and it’s not pretty,” Mendenhall said. “But it’s sincere, and it’s authentic, and it’s genuine, and they’re doing their best. And that’s a pretty cool thing.”
