SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah State head coach Craig Smith was calm during the Selection Sunday show before the Aggies were picked to go to the NCAA Tournament.

In a time where coaches are nervous or anxious when their team is on the NCAA Tournament bubble, Craig Smith was not as Utah State was sweating out the show.

It’s the third straight year that Utah State will be in the NCAA Tournament. Unfortunately, they didn’t play in the Big Dance last year as it was canceled due to COVID-19.

Smith discussed his feelings leading up to Utah State being called on the Selection Sunday show.

“Honestly, I had a very calm feeling,” Smith told the media on Sunday evening. “I woke up really calm. I just felt good about where we were at. The Mountain West had a great year, the top five teams I thought were very good. We finished second in the regular season, we obviously got to the championship game, I knew our metrics were really good. Now, I didn’t know that until after the championship game. But we have a couple guys on our staff that follow this really close, I knew we played a good non-conference schedule. So, I was pretty calm.”

Utah State will play Texas Tech out of the Big 12 as the Aggies are the No. 11 seed and the Red Raiders are No. 6. The entire NCAA Tournament will be played in the state of Indiana.

The Aggies will play the Red Raiders on Friday. Time, television and venue details are to be determined.
