Utah State Looking For Best Start In 53 Years With Win Against New Mexico

LOGAN, Utah – The Utah State Aggies are off to their best start in 44 years with a 6-1 record. With a win over New Mexico on Saturday, they will have their best start to the season since 1965.

How Good Is Utah State?

When the preseason media poll was released, Utah State was predicted to finish fourth in the Mountain Division in the Mountain West Conference.

They have exceeded expectations thus far, having won their last six games. Averaging 47.7 points per game, which is fourth best in the country. They are 40th in the country in total yards per game with 438.

On the defensive side of the ball, they are No. 39 in the nation allowing 22.7 points per game. They have returned three interceptions for touchdowns, that is the second most in college football.

New Mexico Hoping To Snap Two Game Skid

After losing to Colorado State and Fresno State in the last two weeks, the Lobos have a 3-4 overall record, and 1-2 in Conference play. Quarterback Sheriron Jones has thrown for 1,092 yards and 13 touchdowns but has seven interceptions.

Their running back Tyrone Owens has found the end zone six times on the ground on 507 yards rushing.

“They play us tough, we have had tough games against them,” said Utah State head coach Matt Wells. “It’s a very competitive game every time that we play the Lobos, I know we will get their best shot,” he added.

Unusual Win Against Wyoming

During their five game winning streak, the Aggies have scored 42 or more points but was a different story against Wyoming, they were held to 26 points. Utah State had to rely on their defense to come up with a key interception and a kickoff returned for a touchdown on special teams to leave Laramie with a win.

Matt Wells was pleased with how his team pulled out the win.

“Proud of our guys, really good win on the road in Laramie,” he said. “I like that our players and staff are motivated to play great all the time,” Wells said.

Utah State and New Mexico will play at Maverik Stadium in Logan on Saturday at 2 p.m.
