CARSON, Calif. – Cam Rising made a strong case on Saturday night to become Utah’s starting quarterback after the loss to San Diego State.

Cam Rising completed 19 of his 32 pass attempts for 153 yards and three touchdown after taking over for Charlie Brewer in the third quarter. After leading the Utes to a massive comeback to force overtime, head coach Kyle Whittingham was asked if Rising is now the starter at QB.

“We’ll evaluate that tomorrow in the film session and we’ll most likely have a starter on Monday,” Whittingham said. “I don’t want to go the whole week debating on who’s going to be the starter. So we’ll evaluate the film, take a good hard look at both the performances and make a decision on who we’re going to go with. At this point in time, that’s what I’m thinking is how it’s gonna unfold. So we may or may name the starter publicly, but we need to know that by Monday.”

It became apparent that the offense rallied around Rising. When Rising was forced out of the pocket, he showed his physicality by avoiding tackles with a stiff arm and did so multiple times. That’s what the offense needed. Especially after the performance of the offensive line.

Utah dropped to 1-2 on the season. They will return to Rice-Eccles Stadium to open up Pac-12 play on Saturday, September 25 against Washington State. Kickoff is at 12:30 p.m. MDT on the Pac-12 Network.
