Gary Andersen Shows Off Mullet, Muscles, In Rare 1986 Footage With Ron McBride

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A video from the Utah football offensive-line “summer bash” in 1986 has surfaced. Ron McBride, who at the time was the offensive line coach for the Utes, is seen coaching senior center and current Utah State football head coach Gary Andersen through offensive line drills.

The video takes place on “Lake Park City” according to McBride, who had to ask his videographer where they were located. Lake Park City does not exist.

Andersen, who is wearing a skin-tight white t-shirt with the words “can’t get enough” printed on it, while also sporting a very slick mullet, answers questions from his offensive line coach prior to the exhibition of offensive line drills starting.

“I wanted to get my upper body stronger than it was, which it did,” Andersen says in response to McBride who asked what he had worked on during the off-season. “I also wanted to work on getting my squats and hips back because of my knee. I used to love squats before I did my knee and they told me I might not be able to do it (squats) again and so I worked really hard on that and my squat came back.”

Anderson was about to enter his senior season after transferring from Ricks Junior College and “had never been this excited to play football”. He had spent the previous nine months sidelined after tearing his ACL in his right knee.

Remarkably, when Andersen graduated from Cottonwood High School he was 6 feet 2 inches and 190 pounds, in the video, he admits to being 6 feet 4 inches and 270 pounds.

Unfortunately, Utah would only manage to win two games in 1986, they finished 1-7 in conference play and were the worst team in the Western Athletic Conference. Their two wins would come in back to back weeks as the Utes beat Colorado State at home 38-28 and Utah State on the road 27-10. Jim Fassel was in his second year as head coach, at the time.

Regardless, the footage is unlike any other and will hopefully bring motivation to any young offensive lineman looking to increase his explosiveness and power.
