Kelvin Obot gaining confidence in his role on Utah’s offensive line

SALT LAKE CITY — Kelvin Obot’s first college start brought a bigger responsibility with the offensive line, but the Utah freshman felt ready for it.

After playing in each of the Utes’ first three games, Obot earned the start at left guard in Utah’s 31-17 win at Iowa State. It was an early milestone for the former five-star recruit, who is growing more comfortable with both the college game and his role with the squad.

“I felt like really prepared,” Obot said. “So kind of the most I’ve felt prepared so far for just a game.”

That preparation helped turn a potentially nerve-filled moment into an opportunity he was excited to embrace.

A Challenging First Start

Offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven saw more than physical ability in Obot’s first start. He saw a young player handle a defensive front designed to make blocking assignments difficult.

Iowa State used stunts, twists, and blitzes to challenge offensive linemen as much mentally as it does physically. For a freshman, that can create hesitation or lead to chasing the wrong assignment.

“When you’re a freshman, you know, your eyes can start to deceive you a little bit with all that stuff that’s going on,” McGiven said. “But I thought he stayed patient when he needed to. He was aggressive when he needed to be.”

That balance was an encouraging step for Obot and part of a performance McGiven viewed positively for the offensive line as a whole. He described Iowa State as a physical test and said Utah’s linemen came through it “with flying colors.”

For the freshman, the experience also reinforced where his attention needs to remain.

Asked to assess his first four games, he focused on the improvements still available.

“Just a lot, there is so much to improve on,” he said. “So just kind of focused on, you know, the week in, week out, of what I can do better.”

Growing Comfortable At Guard

The freshman arrived as a highly regarded tackle prospect from Fruitland High School in Idaho. His first opportunities have come primarily at left guard, a position he spent months learning before the season began.

“I’ve been playing left guard and kind of many different positions, like all through spring, all through fall camp,” Obot said. “So I feel pretty comfortable.”

He pointed to recognizing defensive movement and repeating his technique as areas where he is developing. Those details are central to the consistency he wants to establish, particularly when opponents force the line to sort through movement after the snap.

Utah obviously still sees tackle in his future.

Head coach Morgan Scalley said Obot’s athleticism gives him the ability to eventually move outside, while his physicality and aggression have helped him earn opportunities now.

“He’s just going to get better and more confident with time,” Scalley said. “The reps that he’s gonna accumulate this season are gonna be huge for his growth going into his second year.”

A Strong Bond With Jordan Gross

Obot is making that adjustment with a coach who has been invested in his development for years.

Jordan Gross coached him at Fruitland, where Obot developed into a five-star prospect and the 2025 MaxPreps Idaho Player of the Year. Obot signed with Utah in December, and Gross joined Scalley’s staff the following month after four seasons as Fruitland’s head coach.

Their move to Utah has allowed a strong relationship built in high school to continue through Obot’s first college season.

“It’s all you can ask for really, just because we’ve been able to connect so much throughout the years, and he’s like such a great person,” Obot said.

The trust extends to Gross’ instruction. A former Utah All-American, Gross spent 11 seasons with the Carolina Panthers, earning three Pro Bowl selections and All-Pro honors.

“To me it adds just immediate validation to like kind of everything he says,” Obot said. “He’s walked the walk.”

Gross helped Obot develop into a player capable of earning an early opportunity at Utah. Now, they are working through the next stage together, turning those opportunities into the consistent play Obot expects of himself.
