SALT LAKE CITY – After the long offseason, game week has officially arrived, and Utah head coach Morgan Scalley kicked it off with his weekly press conference.

The No. 21 Utes will open the 2026 season against Idaho, giving Scalley his first regular-season game as the Utes’ head coach.

Throughout his press conference, Scalley reiterated that he’s not interested in making this game about himself and that a successful football takes a village of people.

“We’re excited for this home opener, we’ve been hitting ourselves for a while now,” Morgan Scalley opened. “We’ve established a two-deep across the board, outside of a couple of spots. We’ve got the leadership in place, and that’s big for us. Our fans are excited. We’ve had 95 straight sellouts.”

Here are the biggest takeaways from Scalley’s season-opening press conference.

Morgan Scalley refuses to make the opener about himself

“I don’t plan on it being too much different,” Scalley said when asked whether walking onto the field as head coach would feel different.

“This is not a Morgan Scalley deal,” he said later on. “This is a University of Utah deal.”

Scalley credited all those around him for contributing to the program and did not entertain questions about his legacy.

That sort of mentality seems to be an early hallmark of Scalley’s approach. He’s been very mindful to credit those around him, and keeping the main thing, the main thing.

He understands the significance of following Kyle Whittingham, but is not concerned about any sort of ‘personal coronation,’ instead his emphasis remains on the players the programs’ behaviors and culture, and the village around him.

Utah’s standard will not change because of the opponent

Utah will enter the opener as a heavy favorite against an FCS opponent, but Scalley does not want his players thinking about point spreads, playing time or the opportunity to ease into the season.

“You want to play clean,” Scalley said. “You’re not going to be perfect, but aggressive. We want to be physical.”

Scalley’s message to his team is to just focus on the guys inside the building.

“Just focus on us,” Scalley said. “Behaving the way we’re supposed to behave, that culture that we talk about. I’m a big believe that there are specific behaviors that .”

Scalley talked about the excitement in the building now that game week has arrived. However, he’s more concerned about the little behaviors that separate ‘elite’ from ‘good.’

“Every position group has a set of behaviors that you’re looking for that makes them elite in that position,” he shared. “If everyone can just focus on becoming the best they can be at those behaviors the results should speak for themselves.”

Devon Dampier’s biggest growth has come as a leader

The simplest update on Utah’s starting quarterback was also the most important: “First, he’s healthy.”

It’s well documented now, Dampier played through numerous injuries and physical wear during the majority of last season. Scalley also shared that his prized quarterback made progress in understanding how to protect himself without eliminating the running ability that makes him so dangerous.

“He’s doing a much better job of understanding his role as keeping himself healthy as well,” Scalley said.

The most important development, however, has been Dampier’s leadership.

Scalley explained that everything a quarterback does is watched by his teammates, from how he responds to adversity to how he approaches warmups and daily preparation.

“Are you that guy that’s owning his 20 square feet, that’s being compelling by the way you live your life?” Scalley said. “Or are you a guy that is giving everyone else an excuse to slack off? He’s been fantastic.”

Expect offensive-line rotations against Idaho

Utah entered fall camp needing to solidify all five starting offensive linemen spots. But the group has also dealt with minor injuries throughout camp, which has complicated that process.

As a result, the Utes have not completely solidified their preferred starting combination.

Scalley confirmed that Utah plans to rotate multiple offensive linemen during the opener, particularly along the interior.

“There’s going to be some rotators Game 1,” Scalley said. “Because of the injuries and because we haven’t been able to solidify that.”

It seems like Alex Harrison, Zereoue Williams, Solatoa Moea’i and Keith Olson have established themselves at the top of the OL depth chart. Who that fifth guy will be interesting to see on Thursday.

Scalley noted that defensive-line rotations are more natural because of the physical demands of playing extended drives. Offensive-line substitutions are less common because communication and continuity are so important.

Utah’s defensive front has something to prove

The other group that needed to find all new starters was the defensive line. Scalley said the that group has also dealt with the bumps and bruises but is entering the opener in a healthier position.

Scalley shared that second-year tackle, Karson Kaufusi, who missed time earlier in camp, has looked good recently and remains a key figure in the middle of Utah’s defense.

Scalley also singled out Jireh Moe for his consistent play throughout camp.

“I like where we’re headed,” Scalley said. “We just need to get everyone healthy and ready.”

The group will enter the season carrying additional motivation after Utah struggled to stop the run at key points last year.

Scalley confirmed that there is still the “chip on everyone’s shoulder” about the way Utah defended the run late in the season. This group in particularly has been motivated by last season’s struggles.

Scalley feels strongly about Utah’s alignment and support

One of the more notable interaction from Scalley had little to do with Thursday night. Asked about the institutional support he receivers — Scalley initially seemed surprised by the question.

“Oh, wow. That came out of left field,” Scalley said.

But his answer was emphatic.

“Yes, I’m very blessed with a president that’s a Utah guy, an AD that is fully supportive,” Scalley said. “We have a really good thing going on right now.”

Scalley acknowledged that the support from school leadership, the fan base that shows up week after week, and the overall structure around the program is great, but it’s not at all what he’s focused on.

“Our focus is on these players and on putting the best product out there,” Scalley said. “We have an unbelievable fan base, and it’s a great time to be a Ute, brother.”
