SALT LAKE CITY – Utah men’s basketball appears to have another notable non-conference scheduling piece in place. According to a report from college basketball scheduling insider Rocco Miller, the Runnin’ Utes are expected to participate in the Charleston Classic.

This provides Alex Jensen’s program an early-season neutral-site opportunity against a multi-team event field in Charleston, South Carolina. According to Miller other programs like Virginia Tech, Minnesota, Oklahoma State, and Dayton have also committed, leaving three open spots to fill.

The Charleston Classic is operated by ESPN Events and is played at TD Arena in downtown Charleston. The event recently shifted to a new format with two separate four-team brackets, with each team playing one game on Friday and one game on Sunday.

ESPN Events lists the tournament as an early-season Division I event played each November.

Why it matters for Utah

This is the type of scheduling move Utah should be making. The Utes do not need to overload the non-conference schedule to prove a point, but they do need games that sharpen them.

For Utah, this is a useful schedule addition for several reasons.

First, it gives the Runnin’ Utes a neutral-court measuring stick before Big 12 play. That matters for a program still being shaped under Jensen, especially with Utah trying to build a roster and style that can translate beyond the Huntsman Center.

These events are not just about wins in November; they are about testing lineup combinations, defensive principles, late-game execution and offensive structure before the league schedule starts applying real pressure.

This is Jensen’s first full roster build, which means this is about establishing the habits and identity he wants the program to be known for. Things like defensive communication, guard decision-making, spacing discipline, rebounding through physicality and finding which combinations can actually function when the game tightens.

Second, it provides résumé value. Utah needs more than comfortable home games in the non-conference. A quality MTE gives the Utes a chance to pick up neutral-site wins that can carry weight later, especially if the field includes power-conference or strong mid-major opponents.

Even if matchups are not finalized yet, the Charleston Classic has regularly featured high-major programs and postseason-caliber teams. With other programs like Dayton, Minnesota, Oklahoma State, and Minnesota already committed, there should be valuable matchup opportunities for the Runnin’ Utes, especially in a neutral-site setting.

Third, it creates a clean evaluation window for Jensen’s system. Utah is trying to become more spaced, more skilled and more guard-driven offensively. A two-game event gives the staff a chance to see how that approach holds up against unfamiliar personnel on short prep.

That is usually where you learn what is real and what still needs work.

The event should also be attractive from a program-exposure standpoint. Charleston is a strong destination, TD Arena provides a more intimate neutral-site environment, and ESPN Events’ involvement generally gives these games added visibility.

A Charleston Classic appearance gives Utah a chance to learn those things early, before the Big 12 starts exposing weaknesses on a nightly basis.

The Bottom Line

Utah’s reported spot in the Charleston Classic is not just another nonconference scheduling note. It is a smart early-season test for a program trying to raise its floor and rebuild its national credibility under Alex Jensen.

The matchups will determine the exact level of opportunity, but the broader value is already clear: Utah gets neutral-site games, résumé potential and a better read on what this roster can become before conference play arrives.
