SALT LAKE CITYOn Thursday, the University of Utah officially announced the hiring of Alex Jensen as the program’s 17th head coach.

After a swift search, University of Utah president Taylor Randall and athletics director Mark Harlan followed through on the highly anticipated move.

“This is an exciting day for our men’s basketball program and for the University of Utah community, as Alex Jensen officially returns to Salt Lake City as our new head coach,” Utah athletics director Mark Harlan said in a statement.

“I want to thank University of Utah President Taylor Randall, Athletics Director Mark Harlan and the University of Utah Board of Trustees for their faith in me as we move into the future of Utah basketball,” Alex Jensen in the press release as well.

Alex Jensen’s strong resume is the big reason for his hiring as Utah’s head coach

Jensen returns to the alma mater with 18 seasons of coaching experience, highlighted by 12 as an NBA assistant between the Dallas Mavericks and Utah Jazz organizations. He also possesses head coaching experience in the NBA’s G-League, and multiple years under Runnin’ Utes legend, Rick Majerus.

“My basketball journey has been filled with so many people who have helped shape me as a coach and as a person, ultimately guiding me to this opportunity to lead the Runnin’ Utes basketball program,” said Jensen. “I’m thankful for all of the great mentors I’ve had along the way as I embark on this next step to lead Utah Basketball.”

“Alex brings with him tremendous experience coaching at the collegiate, NBA and international levels, and is widely-respected for his ability to develop players and teach the game of basketball,” Harlan added. “Alex has a vision and a plan for leading the Runnin’ Utes basketball program back among the nation’s elite, and I am confident that he will elevate our program and reignite the passion of our fan base along the way.”

This is a significantly positive move for Utah Basketball and Athletics in general. Utah landed the right guy to lead the program into the future. As the landscape shifts, the program now has someone who understands the recipe for success.
