SALT LAKE CITY — It wasn’t pretty, but it was gutsy— and for a Utah team trying to build a new, competitive identity under Alex Jensen, that might mean more than the win itself. Thanks to the heroics of the starting backcourt, Utah surged late, sent it to overtime, and emerged with the a 92-89 victory over the Weber State Wildcats.

The Wildcats controlled most of the second half, and even had a 10-point lead with seven minutes. However, the Utes just kept competing, and willed their way to the win.

When the margin was thinnest, Utah leaned on the two who refused to let it slip away. Terrence Brown relentlessly attacked the rim, while Don McHenry buried clutch shot after clutch shot, including the one to send the game to overtime.

In a game littered with breakdowns and second-chance pain, it was Brown’s and McHenry’s relentless and clutch factor that saved the Runnin’ Utes from a brutal loss.

Brown finished with 36 point on 13-of-23 shooting from the field and 10-of-15 from the line. McHenry scored 26 points, and was nails when Utah needed that most.

First Half: Flat Start and Rebounding Woes

The Utes opened the night with a Keanu Dawes three-pointer and a pair of Terrence Brown layups, but those early flashes quickly gave way to a sloppy and disjointed first half. Ball movement stalled, the defense leaked on the perimeter, and Weber State pounced. By the ten-minute mark, the Wildcats held a 26–15 lead and looked sharper, faster, and more cohesive.

Then, a single play shifted the energy. Don McHenry drew contact on a corner three and buried the free throw for a rare four-point play. That spark ignited Utah’s offense — the Utes hit eight straight shots to erase the deficit and tie the game at 39 apiece with four minutes to play before halftime.

However, the momentum evaporated as quickly as it came. Utah went the final four minutes without a made field goal, managing only five points from the free throw line.

Meanwhile, Weber State continued to bully the Utes on the glass, storming into halftime with a 49–42 lead. The stat sheet told the story: Weber owned a 27–13 rebounding edge, including 11 offensive boards and a 19–12 advantage in second-chance points.

Second Half, Terrence Brown’s and Don McHenry’s Heroics

Coming out of the break, Utah finally found some defensive intensity. Still, lapses at the rim allowed Weber to maintain control. McHenry got the Utes started with a layup, and Dawes’ hustle on the offensive glass led to a Jacob Patrick corner three. Then Terrence Brown caught fire — three consecutive layups, including one in transition with a foul, cut Weber’s lead to 55–54 with 16:50 to play.

Every time Utah made a push, though, Weber State had an answer. A pair of Wildcat threes and easy layups extended the lead back to ten, 72–62, midway through the half. Utah chipped away again, McHenry drilling another corner triple to bring the crowd back to life.

The final minutes felt like a fistfight. Brown relentlessly attacked the rim, Dawes delivered a thunderous putback slam to make it 78–77, and the Huntsman Center finally sounded like itself again. Weber State, drilled a cold-blooded three to push the margin back to four.

Brown responded with another quick drive to make it 81–79. Then, after Weber split a pair at the line, Sanders secured the rebound, and Brown pushed the ball up the floor and found McHenry in the corner — bang. Tie game. Overtime.

Overtime: JMHC Comes To Life

The Utes looked like a different team to start the extra frame. Brown scored the first four points, the defense tightened up, and Utah finally seemed to be taking control. The crowd was loud and finally fully engaged in the game.

Then, a missed layup by Brown, and Weber trimmed the lead to two at 88–86 with just over two minutes remaining, setting up a tense finish.

In the end, Utah’s relentlessness and home-court energy carried them through. Brown’s physicality, McHenry’s shot-making, and Dawes’ effort plays defined the comeback.

Other Notables

  • Utah was without Elijah Moore, who took a hit to the head on Monday. He joined James Okonkwo and Ibi Traore on Utah’s unavailable list.

  • On Traore, he went through warm-ups completely dressed, and seems close to availability, while Okonkwo has one more game to serve from the NCAA’s eligibility ruling.

  • Utah was down big on the boards at halftime, but had a +10 margin on the glass in the second half. Keanu Dawes finished with 14 rebounds, 10 of which came in the second half.

Still, the issues were obvious. Utah finished 19-of-35 on shots at the rim and 21-of-32 from the line, numbers that leave plenty of room for improvement.

The early rebounding disparity and defensive breakdowns nearly cost them, but the fight late in the game and into overtime said something about this new-look group.

For a program in rebuild mode, moral victories aren’t meaningless, and those combined with actual wins helps a lot too. It may not have been pretty, but it was a win born from chaos — and in November, that’s how foundations start to form.
