Wes Wilcox Officially Named General Manager Of Utah Basketball

SALT LAKE CITY—Alex Jensen added his second staff member on Wednesday, as Wes Wilcox was officially named general manager of the Utah men’s basketball program.

Wilcox comes to Utah after serving as a long-time NBA executive, bringing vital experience to the program in the ever-changing college athletics landscape.

He has spent the last five seasons (2020-25) as an assistant general manager for the Sacramento Kings.

With this hire, Jensen continues his goal of filling out his staff with a particularly strong NBA influence.

Wilcox is a well-known executive in the league and brings important job experience to a new dynamic in college athletics.

“My family and I are ecstatic to be joining the Runnin’ Utes family and immerse ourselves in the Salt Lake Community. I want to thank Alex for entrusting me with such a critical position on his staff and incredibly humbled to work for a basketball program with so much history at the University of Utah.  I understand how important this position is moving forward not only in the college athletics landscape but also for the future of Runnin’ Utes basketball. I’m excited to hit the ground running right away to help bring Utah basketball back to national prominence and will work tirelessly to help make that happen. I would also like to thank Director of Athletics Mark Harlan for this remarkable opportunity at such an important juncture in Runnin’ Utes Basketball history.” – Wes Wilcox on joining the Utah program

Wes Wilcox is a significant addition to Utah basketball

All together, Wilcox possesses 24 years of experience in the NBA, which includes time as a video coordinator, scout, and personnel executive in the NBA.

Wilcox started his career as a video coordinator with the Miami Heat and New Orleans Pelicans, spending his first three years in this role.

Wilcox then joined the Cleveland Cavaliers organization before moving to the front office with the Cavs. He started as an advanced scout before transitioning to a college and pro personnel scout role.

The link between Jensen and Wilcox came during his time with the Cavaliers. Wilcox served as the team’s first-ever general manager for their NBA Developmental League (now NBA G League) team, the Canton Charge, from 2010-12.

As the general manager, Wilcox hired Jensen as the Charge’s head coach in 2011 and the two worked closely. In Jensen’s second season (2013), he was named the NBA D-League’s Coach of the Year.

Wilcox then accepted an assistant GM role with the Atlanta Hawks, serving in that role for two years, before being promoted to GM from 2015-17. Wilcox resigned from that role in 2017 and became a special advisor for the next three seasons. In 2020, Wilcox joined the Sacramento Kings organization as an assistant GM and has served in that role to the present day.

Alex Jensen’s first two hires address needs

With the hiring of Wilcox and assistant coach Raphael Chillious, the first two additions to Jensen’s staff address major question marks.

Wilcox provides Utah with extensive experience in talent and value evaluation. This is an important hire to help Jensen and the program maximize their resources.

Chillious brings significant recruiting connections to the program. He is currently leading the program’s recruiting efforts, and Utah will be very active in reconstructing the roster.

Wilcox adds significant experience to Utah basketball’s new ‘front office.’ As college athletics continues to evolve with revenue sharing and player compensation, having experience in this new realm is incredibly important.
