SALT LAKE CITY — Utah basketball added another in-state piece to its long-term roster build, landing a commitment from American Fork guard Bryce Mella.

Mella, a 6-foot-5 guard, had previously signed with Utah State under former Aggies head coach Jerrod Calhoun. At the time, Calhoun praised Mella’s size, feel, competitiveness and in-state roots as reasons he fit the Aggies’ program.

That plan changed after Calhoun left Logan for Cincinnati in late March. For Mella, the coaching change reopened the door. For Utah, it created an opportunity to add one of the state’s more intriguing 2026 players home. Mella held offers from Utah State, Nevada, Pepperdine, and Weber State.

He will serve a church mission, then enroll at Utah after his two years of service.

Bryce Mella’s productive high school career

He began his prep career at Mountain View High School in Orem before transferring to American Fork, where he became part of one of the state’s stronger high school programs. At American Fork, Mella continued to establish himself as one of the top local guards in the class.

Mella has totaled 1,475 career points, 357 rebounds, 214 assists, 132 made 3-pointers, 94 steals and 24 blocks during his high school career. During the 2025-26 season at American Fork, he averaged 16.9points, 2.9 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game.

He also earned postseason recognition along the way. He was a 6A first-team all-state selection this past season, a 6A second-team all-state selection in 2024-25, a 4A honorable mention all-state selection for 2023-24 and a 5A honorable mention all-state selection for 2022-23.

Fits the mold for Utah basketball

For Utah, this commitment fits a few different layers of the program’s direction under Alex Jensen.

First, he fits the age-and-development model Utah has leaned into during this roster build. Mella is expected to serve a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints before beginning his college career, which means this is not a short-term roster move. It is a future bet.

Second, Mella should provide valuable depth and development potential. At 6-foot-5, he is not just a small scoring guard. He has the frame to play on the wing, defend multiple perimeter spots and grow into a more versatile piece once he gets into a college strength program.

Utah has been aggressive in the transfer portal, but Jensen’s staff also needs a pipeline of players who can develop over multiple years. Mella gives the Utes a local guard with time to mature physically, expand his game and enter the program older than a traditional freshman.

Third, it strengthens Utah’s in-state recruiting pitch. Utah State originally moved early and landed Mella, but the coaching change created a second recruitment. Utah capitalized. That is not insignificant.

The state of Utah has continued to produce high-level basketball talent, and keeping more of those players connected to the program is important for Jensen’s long-term build. Mella’s value is less about immediate expectations and more about the long-term investment. Utah is betting on a local guard with production, size and room to grow — the kind of player who can become more important to the program with time.

The Bottom Line

On the court, the appeal is straightforward. Mella has solid size, scoring instincts and perimeter versatility. He has shown he can produce, but the next step will be rounding out his game against higher-level athletes: tightening the handle, growing as a decision-maker and proving he can defend consistently at the Big 12 level.

This is not a headline-grabbing portal splash. It is a smart local addition with a longer runway.

For Jensen and the Utes, Mella’s commitment checks several boxes: in-state talent, backcourt size, future roster planning and a player whose best basketball may still be ahead of him. In the modern roster-building world, those are the kinds of moves that can matter more over time than they do in the moment.
