SALT LAKE CITY— Utah’s home crowd came ready to see Alex Jensen’s squad build on early-season progress. Instead, they got a 40-minute lesson in what happens when a defense refuses to wake up.

The Utes were outmuscled, outshot, and out-executed by Cal Poly in an 92–85 loss that exposed glaring issues guarding bigger guards and maintaining defensive discipline.

The Mustangs were able to shoot 50% from the field, and a blistering 14-of-25 from 3-point range, largely a product of Utah’s defensive lapses. Cal Poly’s Cayden Ward finished the game with 28 points, while Hamad Mousa finished with 25.

Utah was never able to put together runs until midway through the second half. The Utes had it 76-74 at one point, but were unable to get over the hump.

Utah’s promising start that evaporated fast

Utah opened with a Seydou Traore left-wing three, Terrence Brown then attacked the rim for free throws, and the Utes jumped out 5–0.

Then the offense stalled, as Utah went scoreless on four straight trips while Cal Poly heated up. A couple of lazy closeouts and missed box-outs later, and the Mustangs had flipped the script with a 7–0 run.

Traore picked up his second foul early and headed to the bench, throwing off Utah’s rotations. Don McHenry tried to keep the offense alive with midrange touch, but the defensive breakdowns continued. Cal Poly’s guards — notably Hamad Mousa — started carving up Utah’s smaller backcourt with drive-and-kick precision.

By the midpoint of the first half, Utah trailed 22–12 and couldn’t find consistent scoring rhythm. The Utes shot just 33% through the opening 10 minutes, settling for contested jumpers and giving up easy looks on the other end.

Every Utah response had an immediate Cal Poly counterpunch. When Brown hit a three, Cal Poly hit one back. When McHenry attacked the rim, Cal Poly responded with consecutive makes from deep. The Mustangs punished Utah’s lack of rotation discipline, hitting 8-of-15 from beyond the arc in the first half.

Utah’s late push — a Brown dunk off a steal and a Dawes layup — gave a brief jolt of energy, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap. The Utes trailed 50–39 at halftime, victims of their own inconsistency and casual defensive effort.

Second-half surge short-circuited by familiar issues

Jensen’s halftime message seemed to land — for about four minutes. Utah came out of the break with a 7–0 burst featuring a Dawes corner three, a Brown steal and slam, and a Brown layup off a Hayes block. The crowd roared as the lead shrank to seven.

Then the same old script returned.
Utah gave up an uncontested dunk on the very next play. Then a three. Then another.

Brown and Traore kept Utah’s offense afloat — each hitting from deep and finishing through contact — but every make came with a matching answer from Cal Poly. The Mustangs’ guards repeatedly exploited switches, posting up Utah’s smaller defenders and getting clean looks in the paint.

When Patrick buried a corner three with a foul at the 8-minute mark, it felt like Utah had momentum again. The Huntsman crowd erupted after back-to-back successful Jensen challenges and a Brown and-one finish cut the deficit to two at 76–74. But just as quickly, it vanished — Cal Poly ripped off a 5–0 run, hit another deep ball, and rebuilt a double-digit lead with four minutes left.

The final stretch was academic. Utah couldn’t string together stops or take care of the ball, committing multiple turnovers in traffic. Cal Poly iced it at the line and walked out shooting 50% from the field, 56% from three (14-of-25), and owning a 42–32 rebounding edge.

Final numbers and takeaways

  • Cal Poly FG%: 50% (14-of-25 from 3)

  • Utah FG%: 46% (9-of-27 from 3)

  • Rebounds: Cal Poly 39, Utah 27

  • Turnovers: Utah 13

Utah’s offensive stretches show promise, but even those were too far and in-between, and until the defense develops the consistency Jensen demands — closing out under control, communicating through screens, and matching physicality — they’ll keep paying for every lapse.

This was a night where effort came in waves and the scoreboard punished them every time it dipped.
