SALT LAKE CITY — Morgan Scalley’s No. 11 Utah football squad (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) visits Deion Sanders’ Colorado (2-3, 0-2) on Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 8:15 p.m. MT on ESPN. The Buffaloes return from their bye seeking to end a three-game losing streak, while Utah looks to maintain its position among the Big 12’s contenders.

Colorado has had two weeks to prepare, gold rush uniforms ready and an unbeaten opponent coming to town. All of that generates excitement for the evening, but Utah has the personnel and the icy whiteout uniforms to curb that enthusiasm.

Colorado’s defensive front deserves Utah’s attention

The Buffaloes’ record makes this matchup look more comfortable than their defensive front should allow.

During his appearance on the Utah Blockcast, Pick Six Previews’ Brett Ciancia identified that group as Colorado’s strength. His numbers place the Buffaloes among the nation’s top 25 in opponent-adjusted rushing defense and top 10 in negative-play rate, a measure that includes sacks, tackles for loss and quarterback hurries.

According to Hudl IQ, Colorado has stopped opponents for no gain or a loss on 24.3% of rushing attempts and allowed an average of just 0.60 yards before contact. The Buffaloes are much improved along the defensive line.

The disruption starts with defensive lineman Santana Hopper, who leads the team with 9.5 tackles for loss, alongside Lamont Lester Jr., who has four sacks and six tackles for loss, and defensive end Toby Anene, who has added three sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss.

That presents a physical test for Utah’s offensive line, which has provided the foundation for the offense’s success. Communication and assignment discipline will be just as important as winning individual battles.

The Utes should resist turning the opening quarter into a referendum on whether they can run directly through that front. Make Colorado defend the width of the field, account for the quarterbacks and respect the downfield passing game.

Devon Dampier continues to play his game

Wayshawn Parker commands attention, and Colorado likely devoted plenty of its preparation to keeping him from taking over.

Devon Dampier and Byrd Ficklin give the defense multiple ball carriers and passers to account for, while Kevin McGiven has several other playmakers to involve. That offensive variety forces defenders to honor multiple threats and can help create opportunities for Parker as games progress.

Colorado played man coverage on 46.6% of passing plays in the Hudl sample. Motion can help Dampier identify assignments and give his receivers and backs favorable matchups against either man or zone.

If the Buffaloes commit extra defenders to stopping the run or pressuring Dampier, the passing game needs to make those decisions expensive. Braden Pegan’s ability to threaten downfield is particularly useful against a defense trying to crowd the line of scrimmage.

Utah needs to make Isaac Wilson uncomfortable

Utah’s defensive front has an opportunity to take control of this matchup. Pressure on Isaac Wilson could play a big role in how this game plays out.

But stopping the run is still the first priority. Colorado has averaged only about two yards per carry in conference play. Ask Brennan Marion about the run game, and things get interesting.

Utah won’t be concerned with that and will be entirely focused on keeping the Buffaloes behind schedule. Because the defensive front can attack the protection with fewer concerns about the run.

Then, when the Utes get those pass rushing opportunities, they have to capitalize. Interior pressure can prevent Wilson from stepping into throws, while disciplined rushes off the edge can keep him from escaping and buying time for his receivers.

Wilson’s passing splits underline the value of disrupting his rhythm, as his completion rate goes from 65.4% when kept clean to 30.0% when pressured.

Scalley and Colton Swan can help by moving rushers around and making Colorado’s protection sort through pressure looks. But Utah also needs individual wins up front. Generating pressure with four would allow the Utes to keep more defenders in coverage and make Wilson’s answers harder to find.

The goal goes beyond sacks. Force a hurried decision, an off-target throw or a third-down throwaway, and potentially leading to a turnover.

Respect the bye without overestimating it

The extra week gives Colorado time to adjust protections, reconsider personnel and build an opening script specifically for Utah.

The Utes should expect something unfamiliar early. A new formation, a different protection or a well-timed shot could give Colorado momentum and the crowd something to sustain.

If the Buffaloes do land an early punch, it’ll be on the Utes to respond properly. Colorado scored only 27 combined points during its three-game losing streak. The bye may improve its execution, but producing enough sustained offense against Utah remains a substantial assignment.

Score Prediction: Utah 35, Colorado 17

All in all, Utah must protect the football and avoid giving extra opportunities to an offense that has struggled to generate points. There is real potential for this to get out of hand, but the extra prep time benefits Colorado some.
