Former Utah standouts Travis Wilson, Kenneth Scott giving back through Ute reservation football camp

SALT LAKE CITY — Travis Wilson and Kenneth Scott built their Utah football careers around trust, toughness and relationships.

Next week, they will lean on those same values in a different setting.

The former Utah quarterback-wide receiver tandem is helping host a football camp on the Ute Reservation through Athletes For Life, with the event scheduled for June 23-24 at Union High School in Roosevelt.

The camp will give young athletes a chance to learn from former Utes while also connecting with players who understand the value of community, mentorship and the relationships built through football.

For Scott, the opportunity came together through Athletes For Life and a simple desire to bring some of his former teammates together for something bigger than football.

“I got reached out to by Michelle and was like, ‘Hey man, we’re doing a camp for the kids out there on the tribe. We’d love for you to join,’” Scott said. “I was like, ‘Man, we’re all for it.’”

Scott was then asked if there were other former teammates he wanted to bring with him. Wilson was at the top of the list.

“Travis and, along with others, is the people I want to bring upon to be the coaches,” Scott said. “It’s because I know who they are, how much they love the kids, but also selfishly for me too, to be able to have all my guys together like we were back in college.”

Wilson said joining the camp was an easy decision.

“For me, it was kind of just like a no-brainer,” Wilson said. “Being able to be back with some old teammates and get together again, and then be a part of this camp, be able to give back to the community and being a part of this is just, I think, a really fun idea.”

The camp will focus on football instruction, but Wilson and Scott both emphasized that the larger goal is for the young athletes to walk away with more than drills.

Wilson said the former Utes have different journeys to draw from and share.

“All of us coaches have a lot of experience to draw off of, and we all had different journeys of how to get to where we are now,” Wilson said. “I think the biggest thing, just want them, obviously, to have fun. And then, if we’re able to kind of share our experiences with them and maybe they learn something.”

Scott echoed that message, reflecting on what camps meant to him when he was growing up.

“I know how great it was coming up, going to camps and seeing guys that you grew up watching and then them coming back to doing camp,” Scott said. “So the main thing is just like, man, while you have this time, playing sports, enjoy the heck out of it, learn as much as you can, maximize the time that you get.”

That theme of relationships is central to why the opportunity matters to both former Utes. Wilson said Utah’s culture made him feel at home, and those relationships remain strong years later.

“To this day, it’s like we still have relationships that are still going strong,” Wilson said. “I want to be able to share that same feeling with other people, to share our stories and just really come together and give back to the community that did so much for us as well.”

The camp also reunites two players whose Utah careers were closely linked. Scott caught Wilson’s first college touchdown pass and also his final touchdown pass, a full-circle connection both players still value. Wilson called it one of his favorite memories from his Utah career.

Now, both former Utes are hoping to give young athletes a message that lasts longer than two days of football. For Wilson, that message is about commitment.

“If you have that goal, don’t ever give up on it,” Wilson said. “Put both feet in, don’t have one foot in, one foot out. If you have that goal, go for it, do everything you can to achieve that goal.”

Scott’s advice centered on knowing the reason behind the work.

“Have that ‘why,’” Scott said. “Just know that there’s going to be some adversity that you’re going to hit, challenges, whether it’s injuries or people doubting you. But as long as you’re standing strong on that ‘why’ of what you want to do and what you want to accomplish, don’t let other things make you waver.”

The camp will be held June 23-24 at Union High School in Roosevelt. Scott said online registration is closed, but athletes can still sign up the day of the event if they arrive early at 9 a.m. More information is available through UteFamilyOn3.org and Athletes For Life.

For Wilson, Scott and their former teammates, the trip to Roosevelt is a chance to give back. For the young athletes who attend, the hope is that they leave with more than a football memory.
