Building momentum after the Houston win
Utah answered a lot of questions against Houston. Now comes a different test: how well does this team handle being praised?
The Utes had plenty to draw from last week. A ranked opponent, College GameDay, a packed Rice-Eccles Stadium and a week of hearing they hadn’t beaten anybody. Cincinnati requires the same preparation and attention without all those reminders.
The Bearcats just beat Texas Tech 37–24 at Nippert Stadium. They have every reason to believe they can knock off another ranked team. Utah cannot spend this week celebrating Houston or looking ahead to BYU and expect to leave Cincinnati unbeaten.
A strong follow-up starts with an offense that finds its rhythm earlier. Devon Dampier’s decisiveness changed the Houston game, and Utah needs that willingness to take available completions and running lanes from the opening possession. Defensively, the Utes need the same tackling, discipline and effort that kept Houston’s production from becoming points.
This is another opportunity for Morgan Scalley’s culture to show up. Sustaining that standard means bringing the same urgency after a satisfying win that Utah brought when it felt challenged.
The Houston win gave the Utes something valuable to build on. A sharp performance at Cincinnati would show they understand how much work remains.
