Utah Gymnastics Captures Big 12 Title In First Year In Conference

SALT LAKE CITY – New conference, same standard. Utah Gymnastics swept the Big 12 Gymnastics Championship at the Maverik Center this weekend.
The Red Rocks posted a final score of 197.775, a full point more than second and nearly two points more than fourth.

Utah Gymnastics Opens Big 12 Era With Conference Championship
The first event of the day was the vault.
Five of Utah’s six competitors posted a 9.825 or higher to start the day. Grace McCallum and Ashley Glynn posted team highs at 9.900.
Utah took home the vault win with a 49.325. Arizona was second with 49.175, Arizona State at 49.000, and Denver fourth at 48.900.

The second event, the bars, was more of the same for Utah.
Five of the six Red Rocks posted a 9.875 or higher with Makenna Smith getting the first 9.925 of the competition.
The bars were more competitive, with all four being within a half of a point of each other. Arizona came in second with a 49.275.

The third event was the beam and this is where Utah really started to create some distance.
The Red Rocks posted a 49.625. Arizona was second with a 49.175 and both ASU and Denver received a 49.125.
Utah’s Avery Neff and Ana Padurariu both had incredible sets and received 9.950’s.

The final event, the floor exercise, was more or less of a formality with Utah already leading by almost a full point.
But they still did what needed to be done. All six Red Rocks posted a 9.850 or better and Utah took home the event win to complete the sweep.
Utah Gymnastics has now won five straight conference championships. They ended their Pac-12 era by winning the last four in a row.
Up next for the Red Rocks is the NCAA Tournament. The Regionals begin on April 2 and the Championships end on April 19. Currently, Utah is ranked fourth in the nation and is the highest-ranked non-SEC school.
