SALT LAKE CITY- Utah held their last media availability of the week on Wednesday ahead of their first big scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday. No coaches were available after practice making the affair rather quiet, but it seems safe to say no news at this point is probably good news.

Earlier on Monday head coach Kyle Whittingham talked about how the Utes hoped to have a few roster decisions sorted out after this coming weekend, potentially making next week an informative one about what the 2022 Utah football team will look like.

Quick Hits From Media Availability

Transfer safety Clayton Isbell has made a good early impression on defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley who virtually lit up when asked about one of the newest members of Safety Pride. Isbell for his part seems like he’s picking up the Utah culture well in the short few weeks he’s been on campus.

“The coaches here love their players,” Isbell said. “They show love by the way they teach and coach so my college experience I’ve learned over time is to trust coaches and trust the process.”

Isbell also says the safety room has been very helpful getting him up to speed and prepared for a big season.

“All of the safeties, they all have knowledge because they have all been here for some time,” Isbell said. “Definitely Cole Bishop, RJ [Hubert] as well. Any time I have questions or any time I mess up they correct me and pick me up.”

Linebacker Ethan Calvert says things have been going well in fall camp for him and he’s just getting back to speed after being out all of last season with a torn ACL. Calvert is fully practicing and trying to separate himself in a very stacked position group room.

“Every practice my knee is starting to feel better, and better,” Calvert said. “I feel like I’m brushing off the rust a little bit and starting to know the plays a little more. Getting more confident out there. I was out all last season and I didn’t play my senior year because of Covid so it feels good getting back into the groove of things.”

Last year’s Defensive Freshman of the Year in the Pac-12, Junior Tafuna is optimistic about how the Utes are looking, but also notes they still have a lot of work ahead of them.

“We’re looking good,” Tafuna said. “Not perfect, but we are trying every day to become who we are and become the best we can be. We’re taking it day-by-day.”
