PHOENIX- Former Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley has continued to shine as the backup quarterback in Baltimore during NFL Preseason. Huntley impressed in action last season while starter Lamar Jackson was out with injury and has continued to make a case for himself in 2022.

Last week Huntley went 16 of 18 for 109 yards and a touchdown against the Tennessee Titans. He also ran three times for 19 yards. On Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals,  Huntley kept the high performance level up going 13 of 14 for 129 yards and a touchdown. Many believe it’s only a matter of time before Huntley becomes a starting quarterback somewhere while certainly continuing to prove he’s one of the best under-the-radar pickups of the 2020 class.

Tyler Huntley’s Football Career

Huntley has always been a guy who has been doubted. The Hallandale High standout was a three-star recruit when he committed to Utah in the 2016 class. Despite being named the Florida Gatorade Player of the Year and showing big flashes of potential, there was some question from national pundits as to how good of a college ball player he could be.

At Utah Huntley found his groove and proved a lot of people wrong. Huntley finished his career with the Utes with a 23-10 record as a starter which is third all time in career wins at Utah. He was named First-Team All-Pac-12 as a quarterback his senior year while breaking several school records. Huntley holds the school records for career completion percentage (.672), single season completion percentage (.730), yards per pass completion (14.1), passing efficiency (177.55), and total offensive yards per play (8.3). He helped lead the Utes to their first two Pac-12 South titles and Conference Championship Games in 2018 and 2019.

Despite statistically being one of the best quarterbacks in the 2020 Draft class Huntley was overlooked. He wasn’t invited to any of the post-season talent evaluation bowls, nor the NFL Combine. The former Utah quarterback received another blow losing out on his Pro Day due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the Baltimore Ravens saw something in Huntley they liked and picked him up in free agency after the 2020 NFL Draft.

The under-rated rookie wasted very little time moving up the quarterback pecking order for the Ravens, jumping original backup quarterback Trace McSorely when given the opportunity. Since then Huntley has been turning heads in the NFL and has generated a lot of buzz for himself heading into the 2022 season.
