SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers turned down a two-year contract extension from Green Bay this offseason that would have made him the “highest-paid QB and player in football,” according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The NFL insider reported that the Packers offered the 2020 NFL MVP a two-year deal that would have kept him tied to the franchise for five more seasons.

Rodgers reportedly turned down the lucrative offer.

“This off-season, the Packers offered Aaron Rodgers a two-year contract extension that would have tied him to Green Bay for five more seasons and made him the highest-paid QB and player in football,” Schefter tweeted. “Rodgers declined the offer, proof it’s not about the money.”

The update is the latest in what has turned out to be a tumultuous offseason for Rodgers and the Packers.

Months after winning the league’s MVP award, the former Super Bowl champion’s relationship with the only organizations he’s ever played for has continued to decline.

Due to Rodgers’ absence this summer, second-year player and former Utah State quarterback Jordan Love took charge of the Packers’ offense during minicamp.

“With my situation, look, it’s never been about the draft pick, picking Jordan,” Rodgers said during an interview with ESPN’s SportsCenter in May. “I love Jordan; he’s a great kid. [It’s been] a lot of fun to work together. Love the coaching staff, love my teammates, love the fan base in Green Bay. An incredible 16 years. It’s just kind of about a philosophy and maybe forgetting that it is about the people that make the thing go. It’s about character, it’s about culture, it’s about doing things the right way.”

Green Bay’s training camp begins at the end of the July and Rodgers hasn’t been involved in team activities throughout the offseason, but rather has spent his time as game show host and practicing his golf skills.

Rodgers is under contract through the 2023 season and will earned $21.5 million in 2021, according to Spotrac.

The team’s first preseason contest is against the Houston Texans on August 14.

The Packers are slated to kick-off their 2021 regular season schedule against the New Orleans Saints on September 12.
