SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Mammoth got their guy as 21-year-old forward Logan Cooley signed an eight-year, $80M contract extension that will keep him in a Mammoth sweater through the 2034 season.
So, what’s next for the Mammoth and No. 92?

After months of negotiations, the Utah Mammoth and Logan Cooley finally settled on a new contract extension that will see him through the next eight seasons.

With an Average Annual Value of $10M, the Mammoth locked Cooley up at a very reasonable number given his undeniable superstar potential and the rapidly rising NHL cap.
Notably, they were also able to sign him to a max term of eight years which is significant as the max term next season will only be seven years.
“I’m excited to sign an eight-year extension with the Mammoth,” Cooley told NHL.com. “Choosing to play with this group of teammates was the easiest part of this decision, and living in Utah has been amazing since day one. The atmosphere at the Delta Center in front of our fans is unreal and Ryan and Ashley Smith have given our team every resource to succeed, which is all you can ask for as a player.
“We have an opportunity to do something special here thanks to the incredible people in the organization. This is an awesome day for me and my family, and I am proud to commit to the state of Utah and to the Mammoth.”
Following his 65-point season a year ago and sudden breakout performance to begin the new year (12 points in 11 games), this is a huge win for the Mammoth as they’ve locked up the primary piece of their future to a max extension at a great price.
While negotiations were anything but easy with the new rising salary cap, General Manager Bill Armstrong not only got it done, but he successfully secured Cooley for nearly the next decade.
What does that do for the team?
It gives them a legitimate chance to step into a championship window in the coming years with a proven young core that will only continue to get better.
“These were not easy negotiations,” Armstrong explained. “These were extremely, extremely tough negotiations. But I always felt during this deal, that there was a deal…in my heart I always felt they would always get done.”
“This will help this franchise take a huge step to becoming a championship organization in the future. Logan has made a huge commitment today by signing with the Mammoth.”
With Cooley now under contract, the Utah Mammoth have locked down their “kid line” for a minimum of five years with a collective AAV of $25M.
That is a bargain, especially considering all the newly inflated salaries such as Kirill Kaprizov’s ($17M AAV), Jack Eichel’s ($13.5M AAV) and Kyle Connor’s ($12M AAV) among others.
Even to have Guenther and Cooley secured for seven seasons at the same price collectively as Kaprizov is going to put Utah in a spot to win titles as opposed to just one guy accomplishing personal accolades.
“Winning a Stanley Cup. That’s why you play this game,” Cooley said in regard to his goals over the next eight seasons.
“When it’s all said and done, you’re judged by winning. That’s what we love to do, that’s what we want to do, & that’s what we’re going to accomplish.”

For Owner Ryan Smith, this type of deal is a breath of fresh air as it’s entirely different than his previous experience in the NBA.
Rather than having to navigate the complexities of NBA free agency that also present shorter championship windows, signing a budding superstar like Cooley for eight seasons will present the Mammoth with a chance to be good for a very long time.
“That’s just not hoops right now. It’s almost like a transfer portal a little bit. For us to be able to say, okay Logan, you’re buying a house…it’s super refreshing,” Smith explained.

The Utah Mammoth will now return home for a one game home stand against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. MT.
