Mina Tanaka’s brace can’t overcome San Diego’s speed in Utah Royals’ 4-2 loss

SANDY — Mina Tanaka proved to be one of the top players in Utah Royals history Friday night.
But she couldn’t overcome years of history.
Trinity Byars scored two goals with two assists, and Melanie Barcenas added a goal and an assist as San Diego Wave FC pulled away from Utah Royals FC, 4-2 at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, keeping the Royals winless against the Wave since returning to NWSL play in 2024.
Tanaka scored two goals to lead Utah (11-3-7, 36 points), which is now tied with San Diego for third in the 16-team league and just 1 point behind second-place Washington Spirit.
But Byars, Barcenas and the Wave out-paced the visitors and held the Royals to just two shots on target — both finished by Tanaka in the loss.
“It’s a balance of attacking versus defense, and today defense lost it,” Utah coach Jimmy Coenraets told reporters after the match. “Our attack wanted to win it. It’s something we’ll have to brush up.”

A record night for Mina Tanaka
The Royals took a fully armed squad to America’s Finest City as Kiana Palacios returned to the bench following an injury to add to last week’s starting lineup that included Cloé Lacasse, Mina Tanaka and Paige Cronin across the front line.
But Utah, which was winless in their first five meetings against San Diego the past three years, found itself in a familiar position early.
Barcenas beat the defense with a diagonal through ball less than four minutes in, and Byars made no mistake with her seventh goal of the season to give the Wave a 1-0 advantage.
The Royals didn’t stay down for long, holding the Wave to just two shots in the first half hour and equalizing through Tanaka.
The Japanese talisman ripped her seventh goal of the season in the 29th minute, taking a backwards pass from Cece Delzer before burying a laser beam from the edge of the penalty arc for her seventh goal of the season to tie Amy Rodriguez’s franchise record with 14 goals in her Royals career.
“Whenever we can find Mina in dangerous areas, she can be so clinical for us,” Lacasse said of Tanaka, who secured just the second brace of her NWSL career. “She’s very important, a very talented player, and we’ve just got to keep getting her on the ball in the 18-yard box — and even outside of it.”
Barcenas did it again in the 40th minute, flipping the script with a pass from Byars before scoring with her left foot en route to the Wave’s 2-1 halftime lead.
Tanaka equalized for the second time less than two minutes after halftime, finishing a one-touch centering dish from Lacasse to move into first place in Utah Royals history with 15 goals in her NWSL career.
“When you’re No. 10 is your top goal scorer, it’s very special,” Coenraets said. “She’s not playing a striker position, but slightly lower position and it’s even more impressive. She has all of the attributes to be a top scorer in this league.
“Right now, I think every opposing team is looking at her and trying to stop her,” he added. “What I love is Mina is finding ways to go around and find different ways to score.”

But Byers broke free again, finishing off a fast break from Jordan Fusco in the 63rd minute before feeding Ludmila seven minutes later to stretch the lead to a game-high 4-2.
Narumi connected with Lacasse on a late corner kick, needing just one touch to pull one back for Utah in the 82nd minute. But the goal was called back for offside on video review.
Instead, the Wave took all 3 points with 46% of possession, out-shooting the Royals 13-12 with five shots on target and using their speed — and more specifically, the track speed of Byars — as well as anyone has all year to hit Utah in efficiently and in transition.
Next up for Utah Royals FC
Utah will try to bounce back next Saturday, Aug. 29 on the road against the Orlando Pride. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. MT on KMYU and streaming on NWSL+.
