Bowen’s Kiwis Bow Out Of World Cup; Scott, Canada Move On Despite Loss

FRANCE – In addition to the three Utah Royals playing on the U.S. team, two other members of Utah’s NWSL club took the pitch for their respective nations in the World Cup on Thursday.
Katie Bowen represented her native New Zealand against Cameroon while Desiree Scott suited up for Canada in a match against the Netherlands.
In New Zealand’s final match of pool play, the Kiwis bowed out of the tournament after a 2-1 loss to Cameroon. Bowen, however was somewhat responsible for New Zealand’s lone goal after her cross was knocked into the net after being deflected by Cameroon’s Aurelle Awona.

Awona’s own goal tied the game in the 80th minute, but Cameroon scored a big goal in stoppage time to grab the 2-1 victory and advance to the round of 16.
Scott’s Canadian club was also defeated in 2-1 loss but its loss to the Netherlands didn’t prevent Canada from moving on. In the round of 16, Scott and Canada will face either Sweden or the United States based on the outcome of their match.

The Royals, without several of their stars who are away at the World Cup, will next take on the Portland Thorns on the road on Friday at 9 p.m. The match can be streamed live on sports.ksl.com or on the KSL TV app.
