SANDY, Utah – The Utah Royals struggled to generate any offensive pressure in a 1-0 loss to the visiting Portland Thorns.

The Royals (0-3-1, 1 point) hosted the Thorns (1-1-2, 4 points) at America First Field on Friday, April 11.

First Half

Thorns goalkeeper Bella Bixby made a nice read in the opening minutes, leaving the box to knock away a scoring chance for the Royals.

Seconds later, Portland’s Caiya Hanks earned a yellow for a hard foul.

Reilyn Turner gave Portland a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute, finishing a perfect pass across the face of the goal from Hina Sugita.

Second Half

Substitutions from KK Ream and Dana Foederer boosted the Royals after the half.

Utah came out of the break with a renewed commitment on offense. The Royals attempted five shots in the first 20 minutes, but could not land an attempt on frame.

Macey Fraser came on for Janni Thomsen in the 78th minute with Utah trailing 1-0.

The Royals couldn’t muster any attack in the final minutes.

Portland held on for the clean-sheet win.
