5A High School Basketball Tournament First Round Wrap Up

OGDEN, Utah – The first round of the 5A tournament features eight games from the second-highest classification in the state of Utah.

The tournament starts with 16 teams that all have the same goal, winning a state championship.

Here are the results from the action at the Dee Events Center in Ogden, Utah:

Corner Canyon 75 – Wasatch 64

The game was tied at 52 entering the fourth quarter when the Chargers outscored the Wasps 23-12 in the final period to pick up the win.

Hayden Welling finished with 25 points and 7 rebounds to lead Corner Canyon. Gabe Toombs poured in 20 points, while Andrew Heath and John Mitchell scored 15 points apiece.

Wasatch was led by Will Harris with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Conner McKee and Lance Gehring scored 10 points apiece.

Highland 71, Bountiful 60

Although Bountiful started the game on a 9-0 run, it was Highland who came away with the victory and will advance to the quarterfinals

The Rams turned in a balanced team effort with four players in double-figure scoring. Jackson Hawes scored a team-high 17 points while Christian Rich completed a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Brig Willlard scored 18 points in the season-ending loss for the Braves.

Olympus 77, Woods Cross 57

The top-ranked Titans quickly buried the Wildcats with a 21-9 first quarter lead and never looked back en route to a 20-point first round victory.

Rylan Jones was stellar with 27 points, eight rebounds and seven assists to led Olympus. Jeremy Dowdell chipped in 18 points while Noah Bennee added 14.

Jake Howe led the Wildcats with 15 points and three 3-pointers made.

Timpview 61, Timpanogos 57

After trailing 20-10 after the first quarter, Timpanogos turned up the defensive pressure and allowed Timpview to score just six points in the second quarter. That was a key stretch as the Timberwolves held on to win and advance.

Colin Christensen led Timpanogos with 17 points while teammate Matt Norman added 13 points and eight rebounds.

Timpview’s Nate Hansen was the game’s high scorer with 18 points in a losing effort.

Murray 63, Farmington 49

Farmington was held to single-digit scoring in the second and fourth quarters as Murray pulled away from the Phoenix to advance to the next round. In the game, Murray committed just three turnovers.

Jalen Thompson led the way with 20 points while teammate Ajak Arok chipped in 12 of his own to go along with eight rebounds.

Kendall Draxler scored a game-high 23 points for Farmington.

Jordan 56, Maple Mountain 55 OT

Jordan’s Nate Maiavia showed ice in his veins as he knocked down the deciding free throw with 0.5 seconds left in the overtime period to give the Beetdiggers the win.

His teammate, Dyson Koehler, had a dominant performance with 27 points and nine rebounds.

Tyler Nelson had 13 points for the Golden Eagles.

Skyridge 50, Alta 48

Alta had a look at the basket for a would-have-been game winning 3-pointer, but the shot rimmed out and Skyridge held on for the win.

Trevon Snoddy and Duncan Reid both had 16 points for the Falcons in a winning effort.

Indy Hanson put up 18 points for the Hawks.

East 54, Viewmont 42

After scoring just five points in the opening period, East played stingy defense, outscoring the Vikings 27-11 in the second and third quarters to move past Viewmont and into the next round.

Andre Mulibea turned in 15 points while his teammate, Cook Daw turned in a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double to lead the Leopards.

Parker Kearns led the Vikings with 18 points and knocked down four 3-pointers.
