High school softball: Hamblin’s grand slam helps Riverton to 3rd straight 6A title

May 22, 2026, 12:05 AM | Updated: 11:30 pm

PROVO — Down to the final out of Game 2 of the 6A softball championship series, Riverton still had an option of a winner-take-all third game Saturday against Region 2 rival Herriman.

Maggie Hamblin and Bre Mackay didn’t want to use it.

The Utah commit and Mackay smacked a pair of grand slams, including a game-tying shot with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning as Riverton rallied from a 15-9 deficit in Game 2 to outlast Herriman 16-15 in eight innings and clinch a third consecutive state title Saturday at BYU’s Gail Miller Field.

Lexi Huntley also had a home run and four RBI for the Silverwolves (27-5) to clinch a sixth title in program history — all since 2016.

But first, Riverton — which outlasted Region 2 rival Herriman 9-8 in Friday’s series opener — had to make it past the Mustangs (29-4).

Jaylee Hansen opened the game with a double, and added a homer and three RBI, and Sofia Lancaster and Aspyn Hawes each smacked a double and three RBI as Herriman scored six runs in the top of the first inning, and added five more in the sixth to lead by as much as 15-9.

The Silverwolves scratched across two runs in the bottom of the sixth, then held Herriman scoreless in the seventh. After intentionally walking Hamblin and loading the bases, Herriman only had Mackay left with one final out to force a decisive third game.

But Mackay delivered with a no-doubter over the right-center field wall to force an extra inning and give Riverton another chance.

After another scoreless inning by the Mustangs, Grace Leary finished the title with a walk-off RBI double to secure a fifth championship in the past six years.

Game 1: Riverton walks off with Game 1 win over Herriman

Kenzie Anderson broke an 8-all tie with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Riverton to a 9-8 win and a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three 6A softball championship series Thursday night at BYU’s Gail Miller Field.

It’s the second win of the year for Riverton (27-4) against Herriman, which won the first meeting between the two rivals in 2026 5-1 back on March 26 before the Silverwolves responded with a 15-2 victory May 5.

The Silverwolves will try to win a third straight title and fifth in six years beginning Friday at 1:30 p.m. MT at Gail Miller Field.

If Herriman wins Game 2, a winner-take-all third game will decide the series beginning at approximately 7 p.m. MT.

All games will be streamed live here.
