SALT LAKE CITY – The Cyprus Pirates emerged victorious in a 9-6 slugfest against the Clearfield Falcons in week one on Friday.

The Falcons struck first early as Brik Barlow connected with Weston Huntington to go up by six. Cyprus put the clamps on after that score.

Clearfield was unable to make it into the end zone, or even field goal range, after the first quarter. The Pirates took advantage with a rushing touchdown in the third quarter and a game-winning field goal from 20 yards in the fourth.

Week 1 Recap For 5A Utah High School Football

No. 5 Davis Darts 56 @ No. 11 Brighton Bengals 21

The Davis Darts exploded for 49 points in the first half en route to a week one win over the Brighton Bengals on Thursday. Davis quarterback Tradon Bessinger lit up the stat sheet, completing 31 of his 38 pass attempts for 384 yards and five passing touchdowns. He added four carries for 44 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Brighton QB Ryce Palepoi threw three touchdowns of his own, but it wasn’t enough to come out on top.

West Field Longhorns 48 @ Taylorsville Warriors 0

The West Field Longhorns showed up and showed out in week one in a shutout win over the Taylorsville Warriors. The Longhorns scored two touchdowns in each of the first three quarters. Quarterback Easton Eilertson threw for four touchdowns, and running back Boston Kap ran in two scores, including an 82-yard march in the first quarter.

Farmington Phoenix 37 @ Roy Royals 7

The Farmington Phoenix started their season strong with a convincing win over the Roy Royals on Friday. Farmington wide receiver Kava Fiefia reeled in two receiving touchdowns, one of which was a 97-yard bomb midway through the second quarter. Running back Drew Love also added two scores on the ground.

Riverton Silverwolves 38 @ West Jordan Jaguars 14

The Riverton Silverwolves buckled down on defense, allowing just one offensive score from the West Jordan Jaguars in week one. John Christiansen punched in two red zone touchdowns for the Silverwolves. The Jaguars’ two scores came on a Daryen Misionare pick-six in the second quarter and a 56-yard passing touchdown to Cody Johnson in the fourth.

Granger Lancers 12 @ No. 2 Orem Tigers 42

The Orem Tigers opened their season on a high note with a big win over the Granger Lancers. The first half was a slower burn, with the Tigers leading 16-6 at the break. Orem then rattled off 19 points in the third quarter and cruised the rest of the way. QB Tayden Ka’awa threw for four touchdowns. Six different Tigers found their way into the end zone against Granger.

Herriman Mustangs 27 @ No. 20 Bountiful Redhawks 7

The Herriman Mustangs stunned the Bountiful Redhawks at home with a 20-point week one win on Friday. Herriman’s defense stifled the Redhawks, holding them scoreless until the final minutes of the fourth quarter. The tone was set very early as Troy Ellermeier intercepted Bountiful and took it 80 yards back to the house to open the scoring.

Hillcrest Huskies 14 @ Logan Grizzlies (3A) 47

The Logan Grizzlies scored an eye-popping 40 points in the first half on their way to a blowout win over the Hillcrest Huskies at home on Friday. Logan quarterback Easton Favero threw four passing touchdowns to three different receivers. Kayden Nhean was the only Grizzlies player to score twice, catching a touchdown in the first quarter and another in the second.

No. 14 Alta Hawks 21 @ No. 22 Springville Red Devils 27

The Springville Red Devils came back from an early deficit to best the Alta Hawks in week one. Alta scored twice in the first quarter, QB Tucker Brown threw two darts to Evan Morton and Steven Tuha. Springville bounced back with 20 unanswered points in the second quarter. The Red Devils tacked on another touchdown with 10 minutes left in regulation, making it a two-score game.

No. 3 Lehi Pioneers 55 @ Maple Mountain Golden Eagles 0

The Lehi Pioneers had the biggest blowout in week one of 5A, defeating the Maple Mountain Golden Eagles with seven touchdowns scored. Running back Devaughn Eka got back to business, rushing for three touchdowns. Quarterback Cash Hollingshead and wide receiver Legend Glasker connected for two touchdowns through the air.

No. 19 Viewmont Vikings 38 @ Bonneville Lakers 35

The Viewmont Vikings snuck away with a three-point road victory over the Bonneville Lakers on Friday. A 20-yard field goal in the fourth quarter from Josh Bartholomew was the difference as the Vikings and Lakers were tied 21-21 at halftime and basically matched each other again after the break. Bonneville QB Paden Toula and Viewmont QB Jack Savage battled in week one with four and five passing TDs, respectively.

Cedar Valley Aviators 7 @ Olympus Titans  14

The Olympus Titans prevailed over the Cedar Valley Aviators in a defensive-minded week one match on Friday. The Titans opened the scoring in the first quarter with Luke Espersen finding Hugh Matsumori. The teams traded TDs in the third quarter. The Olympus defense held strong down the stretch to eventually secure the seven-point win.

Ben Lomond Scots (3A) 6 @ Kearns Cougars 48

The Kearns Cougars rattled off 20 or more points in both the second and fourth quarters to come out with a big week one win over the Ben Lomond Scots. It was an old-school style for Kearns; their rushing game and hard-nosed defense told the story. All seven of their touchdowns came on the ground, and they didnt allow a single offensive touchdown. The Scots’ lone score came on a 75-yard kick return in the second quarter.

No. 17 Timpview Thunderbirds 23 @ No. 8 West Panthers 50

The West Panthers started their season strong with a 50-ball against the Timpview Thunderbirds at home. After the first quarter ended in a scoreless draw, it looked like the game was heading toward a grinded-out result. It proved to be the opposite. West running back Louie Hamilton rumbled for three touchdowns.

Layton Christian Academy Eagles (Independent) 22 @ Hunter Wolverines 7

The Layton Christian Academy Eagles held the Hunter Wolverines scoreless in the second half en route to a solid week one win. The first half came to a close with the Eagles leading 8-7. Running back Trevor Halalilo took two red zone carries to the house in the second half to put Layton Christian Academy comfortably out in front.

Snow Canyon Warriors 35 @ Spanish Fork Dons 10

The Snow Canyon Warriors wore out the Spanish Fork Dons’ defense in week one, scoring 28 of their 35 points in the second half. At the break, the Warriors led 7-3. Snow Canyon’s Issaiah Thompson caught two touchdowns in the second half and the Warriors added two more scores to pull out the win.
