SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Salt Lake Community College men’s basketball team ended the season with a 29-4 record after the NJCAA canceled its upcoming national tournament due to coronavirus concerns.

The NJCAA announced the decision to cancel its basketball championships and spring sports for the rest of the school year on Monday, March 16.

The Bruins basketball team earned a No. 4 seed in the tourney before the cancelation. The team went 29-4 during the regular season.

It was the Bruins’ first-year under head coach Kyle Taylor.

Taylor joined the Bruins after serving as the associate head coach at Idaho State University. He was in charge of the teams’ offense and helped with skill development. Before his time with ISU, Taylor was a special assistant coach for Utah State under former head coach Tim Duryea.

Taylor is the program’s sixth head coach in school history and is the first external hire since Norm Parrish in 1991.

SLCC was led by Spencer Johnson, who committed to Mark Pope and the BYU in October 2019 and signed with the Cougars during the early signing period in November 2019.

How Do I Prevent It?

The CDC has some simple recommendations, most of which are the same for preventing other respiratory illnesses or the flu:

  • Avoid close contact with people who may be sick
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the trash
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. Always wash your hands with soap and water if your hands are visibly dirty.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

The CDC does not recommend wearing a facemask respirator to protect yourself from coronavirus unless a healthcare professional recommends it.
