Rewatch Series: Best Sports Documentaries To Watch

Fans flooded the Salt Palace to see the Utah Stars of the ABA.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The rewatch series is coming to an end and this list one is not about any sporting events but rather sports documentaries that are essential to watch during this time when so many people are stuck at home.

One of the biggest documentaries that is a much watch has yet to come out but it will soon. On April 19 as part of a 10-part series on ESPN and it is “The Last Dance.” This is a documentary that is about the sixth and final NBA title with the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls.

1971 Salt Lake Stars

There are two documentaries on from KSL Sports on the ABA champion Utah Stars that documented that magical season that is approaching 50 years of that achievement.

1992 Olympic Dream Team

This is considered the best basketball talent of all time. This Hall of Fame team went to the Barcelona Olympics to avenge the 1988 team that won bronze. So, this stacked team of NBA players barnstormed the ’92 games.

30 for 30 (All streaming on ESPN+)

There are so many 30 for 30s in ESPN’s library that are a must-watch, so the recommendations will be for some of the best, but you probably should go check them all out. A lot of us have the time to do so.

O.J.: Made in America

This is a look at the very interesting life of O.J. Simpson. Ranging from his days at USC, NFL career, acting, how he felt he belonged in society, and of course, it includes him being on trial for the murders of Nicole Brown-Simpson and Ron Goldman.

“The U”

This was one of the first 30 for 30 documentaries and it takes on the subject of the 1980s Miami Hurricanes football team. There was a follow up with “The U: Part 2” which is not quite as good but if you are a completist watch the latter one that continues from where the first part ends and goes through he scandal at Miami in the early part of the 2010s.

Jordan Rides the Bus

Sticking with the M.J. theme documents him retiring from basketball after winning three-straight NBA titles and turned his attention to making a career from Major League Baseball.

From Elway to Marino

This one takes an in-depth examination of the 1983 NFL Draft that is considered to be one of the best quarterback drafts ever with a record six quarterbacks being taken in the first round, including future Hall of Famers John Elway and Dan Marino

Small Potatoes: Who Killed the USFL?

The USFL actually defeated the NFL in the court of law but was awarded just a single dollar. This documentary goes into how the USFL moved up to challenge the most popular sport in America.

The Two Escobars

This documentary looks at the lives of Colombian soccer player Andres Escobar who had an own goal in a 2-1 loss to the U.S, in the 1994 World Cup. Plus, it is about Pablo Escobar who was a drug kingpin and their stories cross in their respective deaths.

June 17th, 1994

This was a packed day in sports. Game 7 of the NBA and NHL title, World Cup kicked off, Arnold Palmer played his last round at the U.S. Open, and what may have trumped it all was O.J. Simpson slowly driving in a white Ford Bronco on an empty L.A. Freeway.

You Don’t Know Bo

Arguably the best dual-sport professional athlete ever, but Bo Jackson had a dislocated hip that ended his football career and put a near-stop on his baseball career. Prior to the injury, Jackson was a Pro-Bowler and MLB All-Star.

HBO: Legends and Legacies: Ted Williams

“When We Were Kings” (HBO Go)

The “Rumble in the Jungle” was a boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in 1974 and watch by a billion people worldwide.

Runnin’ Rebels of UNLV (HBO GO)

Jerry Tarkanian built a college basketball powerhouse in the Las Vegas desert, and the NCAA did whatever it could to take down its success. This documents the Rebels basketball team from 1973-1992.
