SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Salt Lake Stallions had costly penalties and couldn’t find the end zone until late in the fourth quarter in their 19-15 loss to the San Antonio Commanders.

Quarterback Josh Woodrum threw for 229 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. Running back Joel Bouagnon rushed for 35 yards on 9 carries. Tight end Nick Truesdell had 4 receptions for 74 yards.

San Antonio quarterback Logan Woodside had 164 passing yards to go with his 1 touchdown and 1 interception.

Salt Lake had 11 penalties and one turnover late in the game that costed them a chance to tie.

Field Goal Filled First Half

The Stallions were going to go for it on fourth down with one yard to go, but a false start penalty forced them to kick a 32-yard field goal on their first drive to take a 3-0 lead with 9:17 left in the first quarter.

San Antonio countered with a 21-yard touchdown from Woodside to wide receiver Mekale McKay, but they couldn’t get the two-point conversion and gained a 6-3 lead with 4:42 left in the opening quarter.

Late in the first quarter, Woodside threw an interception to defensive back Cody Brown. On the following play, Woodrum connected with wide receiver De’Mornay Pierson-El for 28 yards.

The drive ended on a 53-yard field goal by Taylor Bertolet to tie the game at 6 with 14:15 remaining in the first half.

Approaching the red zone, Woodrum threw an interception to defensive back Duke Thomas with 5:31 left in the first half.

The Commanders knocked in a 26-yard field goal to go up 9-6 with 1:06 left in the half, but it was called off with a penalty by the Stallions on a holding call. Two plays later, the Stallions were called for a personal foul.

With 8 seconds left until halftime, after a false start call, San Antonio had to kick a field goal from 24-yards out to take a 9-6 lead.

Late Interception Costs Stallions

The Stallions once again, couldn’t find the end zone to start the second half, but Bertolet made a 52-yard field goal to tie the game at 9.

Late in the third quarter, Woodside was injured for San Antonio and was replaced by former North Carolina quarterback Marquise Williams.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Williams found running back Trey Williams for a 36-yard touchdown. On the two-point conversion, Williams connected with wide receiver Greg Ward Jr. and the Commanders took a 17-9 lead with 5:25 left in the game.

Right out of the two-minute warning, Woodrum hit Terrell Newby for a 21-yard touchdown. The former Liberty quarterback threw an interception to De’Vante Bausby on the two-point conversion, who return the ball to the end zone, giving the Commanders two points and a 19-15 lead with 1:48 left.

Up Next

Salt Lake dropped to 2-5 on the season. They will return home and face the San Diego Fleet, who won the previous matchup on a game-winning field goal on March 9 in San Diego to pick up the 27-25 victory.

The game on Saturday will begin at 6 p.m. at Rice-Eccles Stadium on NFL Network.
