Utah CB Clark Phillips III’s Favorite Show To Watch Is Game Film

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Incoming Utah freshman cornerback Clark Phillips III did not hesitate when he was asked what TV show he has been watching.

Rather than binge watching shows on Netflix, the California standout corner is spending his spare time watching film.

“I have to be honest and can’t sugar coat this, my favorite show to watch is film,” Phillips told the Crimson Corner podcast. “I have been falling in love with film. I am watching countless hours. My dad will walk in see that I am still watching film. I try to convince him that I am watching Netflix but he already knows.”

He doesn’t want to be mistaken that he just watches film and nothing else. Phillips said that he watches movies with his family on the weekends.

Phillips has been watching a lot of film from past Utah football games like bowl games and basically every game he can get his hands on.

Downtime With Family

Phillips was forced to go home to California after just three spring football practices with the Utes. He was enjoying the practices that he experienced early in camp.

“They were really good,” Phillips said. “Prior to those spring practices, I did a lot of film study and getting into a groove until those spring practices were shut down. I was really excited to get out there though. It was great, I got to get a spring semester under my belt academically, I learned a lot. Just adjusting to the weather being a California kid.”

Now that he is home, Phillips has really enjoyed working out and spending time with his family.

“It’s been great. It’s definitely unique with the reasons why we are home,” Phillips said. “It’s been a blessing because I am able to enjoy my family at the same time and continuing to workout and get all of those things done that need to be done academically. If the pandemic has brought out anything in a football player like myself, it has allowed me to realize the things that are important which is faith, family and football.”

Workouts With Brother

Being in quarantine, Phillips has had the opportunity to improve his game with intense workouts with his brother Bryce, who is a cornerback that will be in the 2021 recruiting class.

It’s not your average workout where you go to the gym and it’s all there for you. They are creative in how they improve their craft.

“The Phillips, me and my brother, my dad orchestrates a lot of those workouts but I will say that we always do a lot of different types of training,” mentioned Phillips. “It really helps with our style of play where we are both physical defensive backs. I take pride in my physicality and that’s all built with the type of training that we do.”

Nickel Or Outside Corner?

When the spring football depth chart was released, Phillips was listed as the starter at nickel. So, is he a nickel or an outside cornerback?

“Honestly, I play both,”Phillips stated. “Coach (Sharrieff) Shah has given me the tools, the mindset and the different study tools to learn both. I think they see me as playing both positions. They see a lot of value at corner and a lot of value at nickel. It’s going to come down to what the team needs me to do. I want to make sure that I am available to play both and am the best at both positions.”

Phillips is 50/50 on which position he enjoys more.

“I have the most experience at corner from high school but I am growing as a nickel,” Phillips said. “Now that I am learning nickel, I am learning more football than ever.”
