Utah football takeaways: Braden Pegan shines, defense dominates in 33-0 shutout win

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah improved to 3-0 with a 33-0 victory over Utah State on Saturday at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The Utes outgained the Aggies 480-188, produced 23 first downs and held Utah State to 2.3 yards per rushing attempt.

The final score and totals suggest complete domination. The path Utah took to get there revealed a little more complexity.

Defensively, Utah delivered its most complete performance of the young season. The shutout was Utah’s first since a 31-0 victory over Idaho State in 2019.

The offense produced several encouraging moments, but drops, a turnover and inconsistent down-to-down rushing efficiency prevented the Utes from maintaining the rhythm they established during a 16-point first quarter.

Utah controlled the game throughout, but the physical test provided by Utah State also exposed areas that must improve as Big 12 play begins.

Here are the biggest takeaways from Utah’s victory.

Braden Pegan shines against his former team

Many Utah fans entered Saturday wanting to see more production from the receiving corps.

They got their wish.

Braden Pegan delivered his best performance as a Ute against the program where his college career began. Pegan became Devon Dampier’s most dependable target, catching eight passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns.

Both scores came in high-leverage situations. Pegan broke open for a 28-yard touchdown on third-and-14 during Utah’s opening possession, then won a contested catch for a 37-yard score on third-and-8 just before halftime.

Pegan wasn’t simply accumulating catches after Utah established a comfortable lead. He repeatedly gave Dampier an answer when the offense needed someone to extend a possession or finish a scoring opportunity.

Against his former team, Pegan produced the most complete performance of his early Utah career and provided the receiving production the Utes had been searching for.

Devon Dampier remains efficient despite imperfect performance

Dampier wasn’t flawless, but he continued to demonstrate command of Utah’s offense and an ability to distribute the ball throughout the formation.

The veteran quarterback completed 22 of 32 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns, connecting on 69% of his attempts. His efficiency came primarily through the short and intermediate passing game, where he consistently took the available completion and kept Utah ahead of schedule.

Dampier was especially effective between 5 and 14 yards, completing 7 of 9 passes for 102 yards. He also remained willing to push the ball vertically, completing three deep passes for 74 yards.

The performance could have been cleaner. Multiple well-placed passes were dropped, eliminating potential explosive gains and contributing to several offensive lulls. Dampier also lost a third-quarter fumble at the Utah 28, although the defense prevented the mistake from becoming points.

Even with those inconsistencies, Dampier attacked the middle of the field, created opportunities downfield and avoided putting the ball in danger through the air. It wasn’t his most spectacular performance, but it was another example of the steady play Utah has come to expect from its quarterback.

Utah’s defense covers for uneven offensive execution

Utah recorded four sacks, forced five three-and-outs and repeatedly defended short fields without allowing Utah State to score.

The offense gave the Aggies opportunities to create momentum in the third quarter. Utah was stopped on fourth down near midfield before Dampier lost a fumble at the Utah 28, handing Utah State its best starting field position of the game.

Neither mistake became points.

After the turnover on downs, Utah’s defense forced a three-and-out. Following Dampier’s fumble, the Aggies reached the 8-yard line before Rabbit Evans intercepted Grady Brosterhous in the end zone.

Trey Reynolds was at the center of the defensive effort. The linebacker led Utah with 10 tackles, consistently finding the ball against quarterback runs and underneath completions.

The Aggies crossed midfield several times and reached the red zone twice, but finished with only 188 yards and 3.5 yards per play. Utah’s ability to absorb an offensive mistake, defend a short field and immediately regain control was one of the defense’s most encouraging traits.

Explosive plays mask uneven down-to-down efficiency

Utah’s offensive performance revealed both its ceiling and the area that must improve most as the season progresses.

Utah State presented the most physical and aggressive downhill defense the Utes have faced this season. The Aggies attacked gaps, disrupted blocking combinations and made it difficult for Utah to consistently generate favorable gains on early downs.

After rushing for 83 yards in the first quarter, Utah struggled to create dependable movement during much of the next two. Drops, short gains, a failed fourth-down attempt and Dampier’s fumble contributed to several inefficient stretches.

The encouraging part was Utah’s ability to overcome those stretches with explosive plays through the air and on the ground. Pegan delivered two long touchdown receptions, while Daniel Bray turned a crease at the line of scrimmage into a 63-yard touchdown. Bray finished with 82 yards on only three carries.

Those plays demonstrated that Utah has enough speed and variety to score without methodically winning every snap. However, the Utes cannot consistently depend on explosive plays to erase uneven execution.

As the competition improves, scoring opportunities will become less frequent. Utah must create more manageable third downs, eliminate costly drops and produce more dependable gains from its conventional running game.

The big-picture takeaway is encouraging but incomplete. Utah faced a physical defense, generated explosive plays in multiple ways and maintained control of the game. Now the Utes must develop the snap-to-snap consistency required to sustain that success throughout Big 12 play.
