CB Isaiah Herron Decides To Return To BYU After Previously Entering NCAA Transfer Portal

PROVO, Utah – BYU cornerback Isaiah Herron entered the NCAA Transfer Portal last week in what was considered a surprising move. Reports surfaced that Herron was leaving BYU for an HBCU (Historically Black College University) due to the recent racial injustices that have taken place in the country.
Earlier in June, Herron had entered the NCAA’s Transfer Portal.
On Wednesday, June 24, Herron announced on his personal Instagram page that he would be returning to BYU.
“I want to start off by saying thank you to all the Historically black colleges and universities willing to give me an opportunity after I put my name in the transfer portal. I also want to thank BYU, from the entire football staff to the president. I want to make it clear that my intentions to leave were not because of BYU,” Herron wrote. “This place has been nothing but great to me by providing opportunities and relationships that I’m grateful to have. The reason I wanted to leave was due to the current climate in America in regards to racial injustice and the killing of unarmed black men and women. I felt a historically black college was the best place that I could help tackle these injustices because of the culture and locations of the schools. With a little more time to think I have made the decision to stay here at BYU.”
“I realized I can have an impact in this state by opening eyes here and help other African Americans in Utah because of the small amount of diversity that’s here,” the BYU defensive back continued. “I’m looking forward to using my opportunities here to make a positive impact.”
About Isaiah Herron
Herron, a 6-foot-1 175-pound defensive back signed with BYU as part of the 2018 recruiting class and played the past two seasons in 15 games with the Cougars.
In 2019, Herron started at cornerback in seven consecutive games with his last start at BYU coming against Liberty on November 9th.
Herron signed with BYU out of Arbor View High School in the Las Vegas, Nevada area.

Last month, during a Zoom call for fans to get excited for the upcoming football season, BYU defensive coordinator Ilaisa Tuiaki pointed out Herron as a player who “was starting to come on” at the cornerback position.
Out of high school, cornerbacks coach Jernaro Gilford was high on the potential of Herron before he even played a snap for the Cougars noting that the former Las Vegas standout had great size and speed to excel at cornerback.
Herron was a player that stood out to Tuiaki during spring practices before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down all athletic activities nationwide.
During his two seasons at BYU, Herron recorded 26 tackles and had two pass breakups. 22 of those 26 tackles came during the 2019 season.
Herron has three years of eligibility remaining in his collegiate career.
