BYU pulled away from Ohio State in its season-opening win at the Delta Center by scoring 60 points in the second half to earn a 94-83 victory. Star point guard Rob Wright III scored 35 points to kick off his second season at BYU.
The 35-point effort puts him at second nationally in scoring to open the season, behind a fellow Big 12 player, Dior Johnson from UCF.
Wright’s 35 points are the third-highest individual scoring output from a Big 12 player so far this season. Johnson dropped 41, and Ivan Kharchenkov of Arizona poured in 38 in a loss to UCLA.
After a slow start against the Buckeyes, going 1-of-9 from 3-point range, BYU finished the game, knocking down 17 of their next attempts.
New faces on the BYU roster, Jaxon Kohler, Bruce Branch III, Collin Chandler, and Tyler Betsey, all had strong debuts. Each scored in double figures against Ohio State. Kohler, a fifth-year transfer from Michigan State, had 11 points and five rebounds, while Syracuse transfer Betsey grabbed another seven rebounds.
The Mavericks of Nebraska Omaha were in a close game with an NAIA team, Mid America Christian. Omaha won 73-65.
The Mavericks were led by North Texas transfer Cahmai Crosby, who scored 21 points in his debut.
Omaha is gearing up for one of the toughest 24 hours you’ll find in college basketball. The Mavericks will play at BYU Friday night, then drive up to Logan on Saturday to face Utah State in the Spectrum.
