Zach Wilson Closes Out Final BYU Scrimmage With Laser-Beam TD Pass

PROVO, Utah – Zach Wilson prepares for his junior year as the most experienced quarterback in BYU’s talented QB room. The former Corner Canyon standout is 8-8 through his first 16 starts at BYU, but now he’s healthy and making a case that he’s ready to lead the Cougar offense to new heights this fall.

On Thursday, BYU held the final scrimmage of its fall camp practices in an empty LaVell Edwards Stadium. It was a scrimmage that Kalani Sitake said saw good things from both the Cougar defense and offense. After seeing highlights, one of those “good things” Sitake was referring to has to be the touchdown pass Zach Wilson made to running back Lopini Katoa.

Great pass and a great catch from Katoa who has proven to be an important piece to BYU’s passing game hauling in 44 receptions the past two years.

“Laser beam. Love when the QB can bail us out of a bad pass pro rep,” wrote BYU offensive line coach Eric Mateos in reply to Wilson’s touchdown pass to Katoa.

Earlier this month, BYU offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes said to KSL Sports that he felt Wilson’s arm strength is better now than it has been since he had his shoulder surgery in the winter of 2019.

“What I see more than anything is the balls just coming out of his hand better it’s got more zip on it and I think he’s healthier than he’s been in over a year and I think that’s probably the biggest difference,” Grimes said.

No decision has been made yet on who will start at quarterback for BYU against Navy. But you have to think, Wilson didn’t hurt his case making that highlight throw on the run.
