PROVO, Utah – BYU quarterback Jaren Hall has been out since the Arizona State game on September 18, where he said he “had the wind knocked out of him.

Well, it was far more than just the wind being knocked out of him. Hall has missed the last two games due to the injury suffered against ASU.

The big storyline for 5-0 BYU heading into a rivalry game against Boise State is the health of Hall. Especially now after Baylor Romney suffered a head injury and showed signs of being in the concussion protocol after the win over Utah State in Logan last Friday. BYU coach Kalani Sitake said on Monday that all three QBs are “in contention to play this week” against the Broncos.

Hall was on KSL’s UnRivaled for his weekly appearance in the “Players Club” and was asked where his progress is heading into a rivalry matchup with 2-3 Boise State this week.

Jaren Hall gives an update on his injury progress

“It’s the same thing day by day,” Hall said. “But I feel pretty confident that I’ll be ready to go this week and just continue to work with the training staff to kind of resolve the issues that I’m kind of dealing with right now.”

Hall has passed for 561 yards this season with seven touchdown passes and only two interceptions in three starts. He’s also shown off his dual-threat ability by racking up 166 yards on 20 carries. That’s good for 8.3 yards per carry when the redshirt sophomore opts to run with the football.

Sitake said after the win over Utah State that Hall is “close to playing.” But, the sixth-year head coach added, “He practiced, but we just didn’t feel like he was good enough yet. We felt like Baylor had a better week of practice and so we will just feel it out and figure out what is best for the player, number one, and then what is right for our team.”

Hall was asked on UnRivaled when he was ruled out of the Utah State game last week.

“Up until the day before the game. Just understanding where my body is at. Not being able to do some of the things in practice that I needed to do in a game,” said Hall.

Hall on the performance from Jacob Conover against USU

If Hall and Romney are unavailable, BYU would likely go with freshman Jacob Conover against the Broncos. Getting the start would be the first of the former four-star recruit’s career at BYU.

From what Hall saw down on the sidelines last week in Logan, he was impressed with the young freshman signal-caller in Conover.

“He looked very composed. I think a lot of guys when you tell them, ‘Hey, you’re going in.’ I think you can kind of see in their eyes not the lock of shock but just kind of, ‘Oh shoot, it’s my time,'” said Hall. “And with Jake, it wasn’t like that. You know, he said, ‘Alright, yeah, I’m ready to go.’ Just went out and did his thing and we won the game. So I’m super happy for him and it’s what we expected from him when he went in.”

No. 10 BYU hosts Boise State on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at LaVell Edwards Stadium. You can watch the game on ABC and listen to the broadcast on KSL NewsRadio, with pregame coverage starting at 9 a.m.
