SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah State Aggies remained perfect on the road after a 48-17 win over San Jose State on Saturday night.

It’s the first time since 1973 that Utah State was 5-0 on the road. Logan Bonner completed 20 of his 33 pass attempts for 263 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. Deven Thompkins had another outstanding performance with five catches for 127 yards. Derek Wright added three receptions for 50 yards and two touchdowns.

The Aggies racked up 410 yards of total offense and held SJSU to 150 yards.

Slow Start Leads To Strong Finish In First Half For Utah State

Both teams punted on their first two possessions of the game. Then San Jose State turned the ball over on downs but Utah State couldn’t capitalize on the stop as Logan Bonner threw an interception that was taken for a 58-yard touchdown.

The Aggies fumbled the ball on their next possession and the Spartans took advantage of the turnover with a two-yard touchdown run three plays later to take a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Utah State took over after that with Bonner finding Savon Scarver for a two-yard TD, Scarver’s first reception score of the season. Then Bonner connected with Derek Wright for a touchdown in the fourth consecutive game. Just four minutes later, Elelyon Noa found the end zone from three-yards out.

In just a nine-minute span, Utah State scored 21 points and was up by a touchdown. Connor Coles nailed a 32-yard field goal as time expired to put the Aggies ahead 24-14 heading into the halftime break.

Utah State Gets By Spartans With Road Win

San Jose State had the ball first to start the second half and was able to get a 44-yard field goal to make it a one-possession game. That didn’t last long after Bonner found his roommate Brandon Bowling for a five-yard TD.

San Jose State fumbled the ball on the ensuing possession but Utah State didn’t find the end zone. As the Aggies were about to kick a field goal, they took too long to snap the ball and was flagged for delay of game. After moving five yards back, Coles missed a 28-yard attempt with 12 minutes to play in the game.

The Aggies got the ball back and needed just five plays to get into the end zone as Bonner found Wright again, this time for a 41-yard strike. Utah State had a commanding 38-17 lead with 10:17 left in the game.

Coles made a 40-yard field goal to extend the lead to 41-17 with under seven minutes remaining. Utah State put the game away when Ajani Carter picked off SJSU. Two plays later, Calvin Tyler ran in a six-yard TD.

Utah State improved their record to 8-2 overall and 5-1 in Mountain West play. They will return home for Senior Day to face Wyoming on Saturday, November 20. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. MT and will be televised on CBS Sports Network and heard on The Zone Sports Network.
