Grizzlies Stun Jazz With Last Minute Comeback

SALT LAKE CITY – The Memphis Grizzlies stunned the Utah Jazz with a comeback late in the fourth quarter.

The Jazz hosted the Grizzlies at Vivint Arena on Monday, November 22.

Memphis went on a run in the final 90 seconds of the game to beat Utah, 119-118.

First Quarter

The scouting report for how to attack each team was clear in the first quarter, as Memphis relied on beating the Jazz with back door cuts, while the Jazz realized they could get lobs at the rim out of the pick and roll.

As a result, Desmond Bane opened with 13 quick points of a variety of easy looks at the basket, and counters to the three-point line.

The Jazz meanwhile relied heavily on Rudy Gobert and Hassan Whiteside who combined for 14 points on easy looks at the rim.

After one, the Jazz led the Grizzlies 30-27.

Second Quarter

The Grizzlies opted to play rookie lottery pick Zaire Williams in the second quarter, and had him match up with Donovan Mitchell which seemed to light a fire under the All-Star guard who was 0-3 with two points in the first quarter.

Mitchell responded with a 12 point quarter on 4-9 shooting to carry the offense.

Neither team shot the ball particularly well from the three-point line combining to connect on just 10-36 attempts in the first half.

At the break, the Jazz led the Grizzlies 60-54.

Third Quarter

Memphis outplayed the Jazz for much of the third quarter, but as young teams often do, they struggled to close the quarter, and the Jazz used a 9-3 run over the final two minutes of the quarter to erase a two point Grizzlies lead.

The Jazz gave up 38 points in the period, one of their worst quarters in recent memory defensively, but made up for it by hitting 6-9 from the three-point line.

After three, the Jazz led the Grizzlies 96-92.

Fourth Quarter

Ja Morant took over early in the fourth quarter and gave the Grizzlies a 112-110 lead with just over four minutes remaining.

However, Bojan Bogdanovic saved his best for last as he connected on 4-5 three-point attempts in the final period to put the Jazz back on top.

Donovan Mitchell struggled on the night scoring just 18 points on 5-19 shooting and committed some fatal mistakes late in the game.

The Grizzlies went on a 7-0 run during the last 1:28 of game time.

With the loss, the Jazz fell to an 11-6 record this season.

Utah’s next game is on the road against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday, November 24 at 6 p.m. (MDT). The game will be broadcast on AT&T SportsNet, NBA League Pass, and The Zone Sports Network.
