High School Students Create NFL ‘Wordle’ Spinoff Named After Eric Weddle

SALT LAKE CITY – A pair of high school students created an NFL spinoff of the popular vocabulary game “Wordle” and named their creation after former Utah Utes and NFL safety Eric Weddle.
Wordle is a popular online-based word game in which players have “six attempts to guess a five-letter word, with feedback given for each guess in the form of colored tiles indicating when letters match or occupy the correct position.”
Two high school students recently created a variant of the game based on the NFL and decided to name it after Weddle.

The former Utah standout told ESPN‘s Jamison Henley that the students reached out to him for permission to use his name. Weddle described it as “pretty wild.”
The student told ESPN that they picked the name “Weddle” because it sounds like Wordle. “We’re also fans of Eric Weddle and everything he’s done recently,” the creators said.

According to ESPN, in Weddle, the player has “eight tries to guess an NFL player’s name, team, division, position, height, age and jersey number. Like with the original Wordle game, a yellow box means the guess is nearing the right answer and a green box indicates a correct guess.”
About Eric Weddle
Prior to the 2022 NFL Playoffs, the former Utah standout came out of retirement to help Los Angeles’ depleted secondary.
Weddle helped the Rams win Super Bowl LVI on February 13. After the game, Weddle announced that he would re-retire from the NFL.
In the Super Bowl, Weddle had five total tackles and four solo tackles despite playing much of the game with a ruptured pectoral muscle.

In four postseason contests, Weddle recorded 18 total tackles and 10 solo tackles.
Weddle finished his career with 1,252 tackles, 955 solo tackles, 11.5 sacks, eight forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, 30 interceptions, 104 pass breakups, and four touchdowns in 214 games.
